Home is where people want to be, said Wesway’s Carol Neff.

"What we keep hearing is seniors really want to be able to remain in their own homes and families truly want to be able to care for their family member at home," said Neff, Wesway’s manager of services and community relations.

Wesway – an organization that offers breaks to people caring for others on a day-to-day basis – is one of 16 programs that will see an increase of funding from the North West Local Health Integration Network after the network announced $3 million for their Aging at Home Strategy.

Introduced in 2007, the strategy aims to provide support for seniors and their caregivers in order to help them stay healthy enough to continue to live independently in their own homes. The province is spending $1 billion over four years and the $3 million is the North West’s portion for year three.

For Wesway, the money will allow them to expand their respite program into the Kenora and Rainy River Districts. The program has been in Thunder Bay for 37 years and ventured eastward in 2008.

"We feel our service is making a substantial difference," Neff said. "We’ll be able to support more seniors and help them to remain at home by giving their family caregivers a break from the day-to-day responsibilities of caring for their loved one at home."

She added families have told her that by being able to take the occasional break, it lowers their stress and they’re able to continue that care at home and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions and placements in long-term care facilities.

Other programs supported by the Aging at Home Strategy include transitional supportive housing in Thunder Bay, enhanced interim long-term care capacity and Saint Elizabeth Health Care’s Smooth Transition Program that helps seniors return home after an emergency room visit or hospital stay.

North West LHIN interim CEO Laura Kokocinski said they have been engaged with providers and the public, particularly seniors and the message is loud and clear: seniors want to live at home as long as possible.

"We’ve been working with an advisory committee for senior services as well as providers across the North West to talk to them about what services currently exist in communities for seniors and where t here is gaps in services," she said. "We’ve been working with them to look at strategies to implement in the North West."

i know, i know

our provincial gov't, gravelle or mauro had nothing to do with this either

more money from the money tree

on a more global picture

this saves money long term if more seniors can stay in their home instead of care. hopefully this program will be enhanced

Which reminds me Thank You mr Mauro & Gravelle for allowing some of MY tax dollars to be spent in my town. I am just so grateful that the money SUCKED out of my pocket is partially returned All Liberals are true Politicians.

Hate to tell you the truth.....there is no money tree!
What was the provincial deficit when the liberals took power in 2003-2004.....what is it today?
They should have left some leaves on the money tree....they killed it!
I'll buy you a car...just lend me your credit card!

mission accomplished, two responses.

what you people refuse to acknowledge is this.

people, and yerjoking you rank right up there, continue to say the Liberals here do nothing.

Okay, lets go with that. They do nothing. Then they have no ability to bring money here according to your theory.

The money that is being spent is going to be spent anyway. Period. with over 400 communities in Ontario, does it not seem that we are getting more than our fair share. We are.

So the accomplishment is in getting this money delivered back to t.bay to create jobs, build a new economy, that is what is happening. That is why these guys deserve credit.

When it comes to debt, I will join you in screaming, but every party, every politician across Canada wanted deficit spending in this recession, and boy we got it.

But the Feds who are also doing this, Conservatives by the way, aren't exactly throwing the money our way, are they. But the Province is.

So yerjoking help me out. Where would we be as an economy without the hundreds upon hundreds of new jobs brought here by the province. Please answer me that little techincal question.

Chezhank - In 2003, Ernie Eves said the books were balanced. In 1998, Mike Harris said the downloading would not cost the cities any money. Both were tremendous untruths. The deficit when McGuinty took power was over 5 billion, that was 7 years ago.

McGuinty reduced that deficit and ran a balanced budget I believe for a year or two while investing huge money in education and health care. Yes, I remember the health premium.

This was the biggest economic downturn since the depression and everyone wanted gov't to save us. Well they did.

NOw people want to scream about debt. Well, a little too late.

No party is immune from criticism on this topic, but they gave us what we wanted. The same thing is happening in Ottawa. Why no criticism there.

As for the NDP party, they have offered nothing but gov't needs to fix things. Well this gov't is trying. It may not work and in five years I might say you are right, but right now, the opposition parties here and in Ottawa are offering very little.

Ontario's debt hits record $212 billion; 2009-10 deficit $19.3 billion

The Canadian Press

The Liberal government racked up a deficit of $19.3 billion in 2009-10, $2 billion less than forecast in the March budget.

Still, public accounts released Monday show the province's debt grew by $35 billion to $212.1 billion, with the increase going mainly to financing the deficit.

Ontario's debt was $138.8 billion in 2003-04, the first full year in office for the Liberals.

the liberals aren't in power in Ottawa. what are you calling that money.

and if the liberals are as bad as you say, and if they are just throwing money around, then thank goodness Gravelle and Mauro are bringing it here otherwise other cities would be getting it.

how bad would it be if they weren't bringing the cash here.

Ask Atikokan if they like the money Mauro just brought. He just saved their town.

I have friends that were at that meeting. They gave him a standing ovation. I suppose they are all stupid and you are the smart one.

without the jobs, investments and dollars from the province brought to t.bay, this truly would be a ghost town,

If they did nothing, people would be screaming for the heads of our MPP's.

They bring money, jobs, investment and a new future, and people are still screaming for the heads of our MPP's.

Absolutely typical neanderthal thunder bay.

I hope the supporters see what is happening from the critics.

After being constantly challenged to name the failings of our MPP's, they no longer say they are not doing anything.

Now the new topic of choice is the deficit. I guess they hope that one will stick, hoping to ignore the part every politician in Canada played in that area.

our critics keep saying the sky is falling. Keep saying it long enough, one of these days you might be right. Just not now, not last year, not next year, but keep yelling anyway.

so yqt, as I said in my other posting

is the Liberal money tree planted beside the Conservative money tree in Ottawa.

only liberal money is coming here isn't it?

so keep avoiding the criticism of the conservatives, and I will keep pointing out that you just hate liberals.

it is not about a debate of issues, it is just your obvious hatred of liberals
