A former Thunder Bay mayoral candidate has been arrested by the area's Organized Crime Unit following the discovery of a marijuana grow-op in Oliver-Paipoonge.

Doug MacKay, 57, is facing several charges including production of marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Officers found 323 pot plants growing on a property off West Arthur Street near the 25th Sideroad along with 16 kilograms of dried marijuana. Police say the street value of the drugs is about $630,000.

MacKay is a vocal marijuana advocate, and finished a distant third to Mayor Lynn Peterson in the 2006 election.

Classifying this person as a former mayoral candidate, even thou he was, is a joke.

He offered nothing but hilarity throughout his campaign.

This was no surprise whatsoever.

I'm curious why the name of the accused in this bust is published, but others are not, like recent pot bust in Neebing and others involving cocaine, pills, etc. Maybe the moderator on this forum can provide a logical explanation for the double standard?

@Westfort Resident: He ran for mayor. Remember, "I will legalize pot in Thunder Bay and we will become like Amsterdam and thrive on the tourism"? That was his plan!

For those of you who think guys like this are no harm, do you think organized crime within the city allows large marijuana operations to flourish without getting a cut. They would want a piece.

@tsb it shouldn't matter if he ran for mayor or not...if they are going to publish the name of one accused then they should publish them all.

Never mind being a "mayoral candidate" ...how 'bout when he was the star of his own little show???
Perhaps if Mr Mackay had not been so bold with his "in your face" attitude during his 20+ minute video of growing pot on crown land, he wouldn't be facing charges right now. Shocking that a well respected Canadian news source tromped along beside him, recording his every word and plant...for that matter. AND did a follow up some time later, showing how unfortunate that it was he got charged after the airing of the footage. And that wasn't THIS time around...so he certainly shouldn't be surprised by what has happened. My guess would be that if Mr. Mackay had quietly grown his marijuana and not brought it to the worlds attention over and over again, right to the point of national coverage...he might have a little less trouble these days. And let's not forget that although he claims to grow this product for the sole purpose of "helping" those who need it...he sure is making a mittful of money while doing it. Money that he doesn't pay taxes on...that he didn't contribute to the upkeep of that plot of land or the road that took him there...and money that will no doubt be now used to pay his defence....but sure won't cover the cost to society to house him in jail if he is convicted. Hmmm...a little thinking might have gone a long way for this fella. Sooo - let's not feel sorry for the choices that he made.
I will give him this though....the plants in the video sure looked nice n' healthy, He's quite the "farmer"...just like he claimed to be.

this person helps a lot of people at the compassionate cafe and will be greatly missed by those in need. The media seems only to print names which will make their story readworthy....ie. Christine Lannon, Doug McKay but the other busts in Neebing etc. were not listed. The only reason for leaving these names absent is due to underage reasons or the police investigation is still underway...what the media decides to print is up to them.
