The latest stats from Environment Canada confirm the month of August was one of the hottest on record.

The average temperature was 18.6 C. That's a full two degrees warmer than normal and three degrees higher than August of last year. The record for the month is 20.3 degrees, set in back in 1983. Local climatologist Graham Saunders said it's the high humidity levels which really made August feel like a scorcher.

Because of the weather and number of swimmers, the city will keep Art Widnall and Heath Park pools open until Sunday. Pools usually close Sept. 1 but supervisor Sean Bodkin said he can’t remember seeing so many swimmers at local pools.
The swimming season at Dease Pool, Chippewa Park and Boulevard Lake has now come to an end.

If the city extended swimming at Widnall and Heath Park why oh why not the others.?

All or none would be the correct way to go on this.

The pools have lifeguards so they need to ensure the safety. Some of these lifeguards likely had to go back to school. WTG Thunder Bay on keeping the swimming going just a little longer!! Nice to see the kids being able to swim a little longer.

No "all or none" is NOT the correct way to go. Rick, you need to put more time into your thoughts.

Here are 2 reasons off the top of my head as to why all or none is "correct".

1. Staffing - Maybe there is only enough staff for 2 pools due to school or other jobs. Maybe some of these lifeguards attend college or university out of town and have left?

2. Demand - maybe the make up of people going to these pools are different and these will be the most used.

Again, you do not have all or perfect information, yet you make a decision.

well rick, why not take into consideration the fact of cost to keep the others open as well. i would say that the attendance does not justify the cost. you seem to be one of the first to complain about the city's poor spending.

Dease Pool isn't as well used as Heath and Widnall, and Widnall is only a few blocks away from Dease so the kids can just go there.

Rick - I was all set to post all the info in the posts below me in regards to staffing/school/usage and such but decided to let others out you for the limited intelligence you have.

Rick, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. You really need to stop commenting on things you are not experienced in and have little exposure to.

I agree it's nice to see a city employee using good judgement and extending the pool season. And leaving out one pool makes economic sense, in this case. Now if the weather just cooperates over the weekend, the kids will be happy.

All or none right Rick... You would have been the first one to complain that the city was spending too much extra money to keep all the pools and swimming area open. The city made the right call, keep 2 open and busy as opposed to all open and not well used.
