Less than a year after breaking ground, officials with Confederation College say a new medical building is on track to be completed by its deadline next spring.

The Regional Education Alliance for Community Health building was first announced last October. Since then, the 47,000-square foot building has been going up quickly said Ron Vopni, facilities director for Confederation College.

The college hopes to have the exterior finished before winter so interior construction can begin Vopni said. Because funding has come from the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, REACH has to be completed by March 31, 2011 he said.

"We’re on schedule and we’re on budget so it’s been really good so far for us and everything looks good going forward," said Vopni.

The $13-million building will house programs for the college’s health and community services program. With record enrollment at 1,000 students, health and community services dean Kathleen Lynch said the space was necessary to fit all of the programs in her department. Because the college is 40-years-old, Lynch said REACH will also help students with new technology not currently found at the college.

"We need state of the art technology and simulation in order to provide the necessary education for students so they can compete once they graduate," she said. "We needed more space…and we needed new space as well."

The building will also feature a dental clinic and labs for the college’s medical assistant program among other new facilities Lynch said.

So if the college can stay on budget, why can't the city? Kinda throws a monkey wrench into the argument of the Mayor's cheerleading squad.

$13 Million in uncollected tax money will pay for this building. (ie. Federal Debt)

A good example of mortgaging the future of the innocent. The students ironically will be paying for this and many other make work projects that are all just an illusion of wealth.

There is no free lunch.

yeap, I am sure this is just another example of wasteful gov't spending in our city that our two MPP's had nothing to do with.

When was the last time we heard about Federal money even close to this amount coming in. I can think of Marina Park - the province matched it, Bombardier ( once ), matched by the province who funded the other 3 projects.

But that is about it for major investments by Ottawa. That would lead me to think we are being ingored by Ottawa and heard well by Toronto.

Hey nvjgu, where do you work in construction? Out west? Because you obviously don't work in Thunder Bay. Every company working on this project is LOCAL. Every single one. And there are 30 of them. You are the best example EVER of taking a good news story and complaining about it with no knowledge of reality. Shut up if you have no clue what you are talking about.

@lori... this is provincial and federal funds. Our MP's and MPP's had a lot to do with it.

@kdawg... this isn't mortgaging money.. It’s investing money. For Thunder Bay this was a huge gift and necessary to our future. We are a knowledge based economy... we are going to need to continue to invest in education to ensure we are not caught in the past.

I don't know where they got the 13 million dollar price tag from... this is a 21 million dollar project:

This was VERY necessary for Confederation as the school of health has seen the largest growth... and is the most competitive in Ontario. This expansion doesn't even come close to addressing the demand.... but will definitely ease the over-population there is now.

To Lori and KDawg, are you both FOMPED? Your pathetic fear mongering attempts to discredit everything good in Thunder Bay is nothing more than a joke! Why should the governments continue to invest huge in Southern Ontario? For the first time in decades, Thunder Bay is getting some TLC from our southern politicians, they recognize the need for regional growth in all of Northern Ontario to prevent us from becoming welfare cases. Not to mention the soon to be lucrative "Ring of Fire". Everyone involved in building Thunder Bay's new and growing knowledge based sector deserve our gratitude and support! I for one am very proud the REACH is now a new reality at Confederation College. And I know several people working at the construction site.
