Shipping totals up last month, still down over year
By tbnewswatch.com
Some good news on Thunder Bay's waterfront in what has been an otherwise disappointing shipping season.
Latest figures from the Thunder Bay Port Authority show over 600,000 tonnes of cargo moved through the port last month, a jump of about 10 per cent over traffic volumes in August of 2009. The increase is the result of higher grain shipments as August totals jumped from 400,000 460,000 tonnes. Despite the improvement, cumulative shipping totals are still well down from those recorded last year.
To date, almost 3.9 million tonnes of cargo has moved through the port this year compared to over 4.2 million at the same time last year.
