A Sudbury company has been awarded a $41.9 million contract to twin a six-kilometre stretch of highway between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

The section of highway affected falls between Hodder Avenue and Highway 527, and is expected to create as many as 300 jobs during the lifespan of the project, expected to be completed in 2013.

The construction will also include the construction of a new interchange at Hodder Avenue and Copenhagen Road, a new entranceway to the Terry Fox Scenic Lookout and a new intersection at Highway 527 and Spruce River Road.

"I am extremely pleased that we are undertaking this major expansion of Highway 11/17," said Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry Michael Gravelle, in a release issued by the province on Friday. "This stretch of highway is very important to the people and economy of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario."

Teranorth Construction and Engineering of Greater Sudbury was selected by the province to do the project, deemed necessary by the province to improve traffic flow and increase safety.

Try to google info about the company.

I hope they exist, (and more importantly, are reputable constructors) if we're to give 40+ million of our cash to them.

Marathonlogger.

First of all, the money came from Queens Park. Meaning in all likely- hood most of it came from the 416 and 905 Area Codes. Because that is where most of the taxes are collected. Secondly, local labour and truck companies will get the work, so I don't see a problem here.

THE REAL PROBLEM I see is building only 3 km a year. At that rate. it will take 33 years to twin the road to Nipigon . At that rate it would take 997 Years to build a highway to Vancouver. Come to think about it, that endeavour would make a great Millennium project for the year 3,000.

Frankly, if you are only going to twin 3 km a year, I would rather you didn't bother. I could do without the traffic delays. The automobile will be ancient history by the time you are finished. If these guys were building the Canadian Railway, The National Dream would still be just that.... a dream.

Yes, they exist and yes they are reputable. They are doing some of the major contracts south of Sudbury with the twinning of Highway 69 as well as some of the work south of North Bay on the Highway 400 project. They've also done work in this area before, too.

Interchange at Hodder and Copenhagen? A cloverleaf? Is an interchange even needed there? For the amount of traffic that intersection sees, it makes sense to put a light there. An interchange would be better suited in town, especially at the Harbour Expressway.

40 milion it's a lota money but just a drop in a hugh bucket when building a road and will cost 20 mill more than that . Also hopeing the people working on the expressway here dont go anyway near that project it will take double the time.

marathonlogger, currently a company from sudbury is working on the bridges that this road will go over. The land in which they are working is hard and expensive to work with. With the amount of forest in the area a large amount of hauling will also need to take place. The Canadian shield isn't easy to work with which is why big projects take big money and time.

WOW...that is one expensive 6km stretch of roadway. What a waste of money in my opinion.

The project is for about 28 km’s. There will be approximately 10 tenders to complete the project. Including clearing the land, McKenzie River section(2 new bridges already awarded to this same contractor) , Hodder ave interchange- Terry Fox- 527, CPR over pass, Lakeshore Drive/ McKenzie Station Road realignment etc. They are probably one of only a few northern based contractors that can do this job, there is no one locally. If the MTO let it go as one tender (28km) there would only be a few Ontario companies that could bid.(bonding issues) It would have probably ended up going to PCL Edmonton or an American company like Kewit.

i am still of fan of no twinning the highways. it's a waste of money in my opinion. yes, people get hurt on it, and yes, it can be dangerous, but there are more injuries, close calls, deaths and accidents at our highway intersections. get rid of the lights at red river and john before you build an interchange at hodder! come on.. use LOGIC people!

I agree... 6km is not a major project.. its a minor project. Nipigon is over 100km away.. and we are doing 6% of the road to Nipigon(small town) Toronto is important,, if the highway was double laned all 1400km.. then that would be a major project and help the economy and commerce. 6km of 1000km(as that is the distance to where the double laning starts again) is VERY MINOR in reality.

in typical fashion, no good deed goes unpunished.

So now our "experts" are highway builders. Is there no end to their talent.

For years we have been screaming for highway improvements. So they extend Harbour Exp when the conservatives wouldn't. A waste of money said some even though people had been screaming for it.

Our highways are brutal say others and we have had more money put in to our highways in the past four years than ever. Still not good enough for some forgetting also the re-surfacing a huge stretch towards the border

We need to twin the highway and they begin with this section, the first time in our memory that a gov't is doing at least some of it.

Nope, not good enough. Either a waste of money or not far enough.

So in conclusion - do nothing get criticized, do something get criticized.

that just about sums up the attitude of the critics.

It is not just 6 km, it is 3 new intersections. I suppose some people thought those were freebe's

maybe the gov't should just forget about our highways because they can't get it right. Don't spend the money because it is just Liberals trying to buy our votes, give the money to the south because they don't know we are up here, and then the "critics" can claim we never get anything.

I will ask the critics yet again.

first, is there anything they have done that you agree with

B- what do you want them to do. spell it out in clear language for us uneducated folks. We need to learn from your expert wisdom on how our gov't could be better for us up here in t.bay.

nothing, will ever be good enough for some of these folks.
