Kenora MP Greg Rickford’s new job may keep him on his toes but he said he isn’t going to let the workload distract him from his obligations in his riding.

On Aug. 29, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper nominated the first-term representative as the Parliamentary Secretary of Official Languages. Rickford took over the position from Manitoba MP Shell Glover, who moved to secretary of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

"I am pleased to announce the nominations of Shelly Glover and Greg Rickford as Parliamentary secretaries and have every confidence that they will fulfill their roles with energy and conviction," said Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In his new role, Rickford will assist Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages James Moore. Duties as a parliamentary secretary could include representing Moore in committee meetings and work closely with members of Parliament in the House of Commons.

Rickford said he’s grateful for the new position calling it an act of confidence on the Prime Minister’s part.

"Stephen Harper recognizes that we have and will continue to put the great Kenora riding and northwestern Ontario’s interests as our top priority," Rickford said. "But it is also, in my mind, a statement that this is an opportunity for an MP and his team from a northern riding to participate in issues that are more broader and national in scope."

As with any new job means more work. However, the Tory MP said he wasn’t worried about the additional work and welcomed the challenge.

"The great news is that I’m juggling way more than two things," he said. "Obviously, my work with my contingencies in my riding will remain my top priority. I’m taking this very seriously and I am looking forward to the challenge."

How bizarre. Not only is Rickford only able to speak the most basic French - according to the record, he often apologizes for having to answer French questions in parliament in English - his Kenora riding has almost no french speakers. So why this appointment for official languages?

The only thing it could be is the Conservatives are afraid of losing the seat to Liberal Roger Valley, and want Rickford to get the 5-6 extra staff and budget that comes with being a parliamentary secretary. You can bet most of them won't be working on official languages much.

I was curious about this story and did a quick check on Bill Mauro's website.

He is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Government Services and he is the Chair of the Northern Caucus.

I am wondering why a story was done on Mr. Rickford who has nothing really to do with our riding although he is a northern representative. I do not recall there every being a story about Mr. Mauro and the roles he has.

I have nothing against Mr. Rickford, nor am I a strong Liberal, but I do wonder why local stories are not given slightly more coverage than these.

Mr. Hampton is often quoted in media stories when he has nothing to do with Thunder Bay. I would much rather hear from our two Federal Rep's or our two provincial reps on areas of interest to our community.

Just my two cents but I would appreciate more local coverage of the work being done by our four elected officials.

psmith I recommend if you don't know what you are talking about maybe you shouldn't speak.

Greg Rickford has done an outstanding job as a member of Parliament for the Kenora Riding as well as a Northern Ontario rep for areas like Thunder Bay. I bring up the Ontario Rep for the fact that he has made so many funding announcements on behalf of the Federal Conservative Government in and around Thunder Bay. He has done an OUTSTANDING job representing not only my Riding but yours as well. MP Rickford doesn't have to worry about losing his seat to former MP Valley. The reason he was given a Parliamentary Secretary post is to groom him into being a Cabinet Minister in the near future. Greg has what it takes to become a Cabinet Minister and a lot of great connections. He has brought the Prime Minister and other high ranking Federal Ministers to the region on several occasions. This my friend is why he was given the post to groom him into being 1 of the ministers 1 day. That will be good for Kenora riding as well as Most of NW Ont.
