A Thunder Bay murder suspect has avoided going to trial, after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with another young man's death.

Jessie Patrick George, 21, was originally charged with aggravated assault after an incident in a laneway off Victoria Avenue in April 2009. The victim, 19-year-old Joseph Kakeway suffered serious injuries and died in a hospital 10 days later.

The charge against George was upgraded to second-degree murder. Both the suspect and the victim resided at Shelter House at the time.

George has been in custody ever since his arrest, and has now agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 19 at the Superior Court of Justice in Thunder Bay. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

So the crown took the easy way out on this one, why no pursue the original upgraded to second-degree murder charge.?

So this guy will now get a small sentence and be back out on the street before you know it.

So much for our justice system, we need to give out sentences more like they do in the USA.

What does this say to the deceased person's family.?

Wow, nice light sentence for beating someone to death.

If Id have known how light the sentence was when I was younger, Im sure I woulda beat some people much worse than I did.
