Thunder Bay's Keefer Terminal has been buzzing with activity recently.

On Wednesday crews at the port were busy unloading wind turbines from a German ship. While the turbines are headed to Alberta, port officials say they are looking forward to similar shipments next year that will be set up in this region.

The turbines arrived in Thunder Bay on Sunday, aboard the Beluga Favourisation and they are being unloaded in various pieces. This is the first shipment of the turbines the terminal has received this year, and another is scheduled to dock in a couple of weeks.

Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said the 16 turbines originated in Germany, and will be loaded onto trucks for delivery to a wind farm in Alberta. He said dealing with shipments like this is something the port has been working on for years.

The majority of wind turbines unloaded in Thunder Bay so far have been shipped west, but those shipments will soon be delivered closer to home. Several wind farms have been planned for this region, with the first one expected to go up next year outside of Dorion.

Heney said Keefer terminal will be an ideal location for that delivery and possibly others.

Heney added that the unique thing about this week's wind turbine shipment is that when the big vessel returns to Europe, it will be carrying a load of flax seed bound for Belgium. It is that kind of two-way shipping that the Port Authority believes shows how versatile the Thunder Bay port can be.

TBNews kicking a hornets nest when they should just mind their own business. This shipment is one of many that have been taken place over the last 5 years. Several locations in this area have wind turbine parts sitting in their yards and fields.

Basically this isn't news.

I hope these don't travel through the Neebing area for the fear of Health problems for the area residents.

okay, don't those people in Alberta know how dangerous these turbines are.

The whole world is cancelling turbines. They kill birds, they break up clouds, they cause windstorms in Heaven. The stars shake a little and the space station astronauts can't sleep because of the sun flicker.

they are the devil and they have no place in the civilized world.

There, did I about capture the essence of those against the wind turbines.

fortunately for us here in t.bay, our scientific experts are telling us that these should not be used here. Most of those scientific experts have taken the unusual step of concealling their identity by posing as ski-hill and restaurant owners.

in Alberta, the land of plentiful oil, it is okay to use them, in Dorion it is okay, just not here in the south part of the city on the mountain.

now, I don't agree with where they are going to put them either, but the health risks that those opposed are suggesting, are truly out of this world.

When I read the title, I thought they meant the wind turbines for Neebing. I can't wait for those. I'll be waiting at the terminal taking pictures!

If you paid the taxes the people who live in the norwester area do maybe they have a right to say what they look at- Maybe we should put them on the bluffs and Hillcrest Park and then everyone has something to look at- we can use the so called revenue these generate to offset taxes- sounds like a win win for everyone in the city- everyone can have a turbine in their back yard

angela, angela, angela, give my initial posting another read and you should conclude that my issue is not the opposition to where the turbines are going to go, but to the incredibly misleading information on the alleged health risks while other jurisdictions are embracing them.

I don't think the location is good.
I think the city blew it in negotiations
I think this council is getting a free ride on what their position is

But I can accept you don't want them. Some of your colleagues are using false information to try and win this battle.

As for your taxes, please.

Do you have the corner covered on taxes or is it possible I pay even more than you.

As for your idea of Hillcrest Park, I am sorry that property is already sold. In case you were not aware, I am putting up condo's there to go with the great condo development on Marina Park.

Once those are built at Hillcrest, I am going to build some more at Boulevard Lake, Vickers Park and in the Friendship Gardens.

Please tell me, really...
If wind turbines are sooo good, and Canadian Tech is cutting edge, are we importing wind turbines???
We have the tech, resources and the facilities, that would reduce the GREEN THING, right???
Why pay for offshore commerce, sea travel and then trucking to site? Especially when we can do it inhouse!!!!

Phase 2!!!

As TBay over genertes power now...and wind is between 3_5 % costlier, Who will purchase this power and what will we do with the already generated power?
Please remember Kakabeca can refit a much larger turbine set, but thay have no market for that power...
And its already outlasted the 20 year life of a wind turbine

Who are you to say whats news and whats not, if you dont like a story move on to the next one, maybe there will be pictures so you can understand it a bit better.

Angela: I pay taxes in my area of town does that mean that I get to say what i do and do not get to look at? So if i dont like a neighbours house, or the crappy gnomes they have in the front yard i can have them removed? Maybe I dont like the way one of the gnomes is looking at me, maybe its causing stress which could be considered a health issue, or maybe I just dont care.

Put the turbines on the mountains, already so we can stop listening to the cries from neebing.

ohplease says:
angela...come on. The people who live all the way out in the Norwester area drive into town, maybe more than once a day emitting TONS of extra greenhouse gases. I think the wind turbines are a fair trade off for that. I know I'm doing my part by trying to reduce greenhouse gases...I think a turbine is a small price to pay for the future of our kids. Turbines make clean energy. Daily unnecessary commuting from the pretty mountains, not so much.

oh and Pie, the 90's called...they want their 'Not' Joke back :P
9/10/2010 6:00:31 PM
pieislandrefugee says:
oh please, spare us the drive into town nonsense here.

they pay tax on every drop of gasoline they burn. Someone who lives in town may drive more in one day than someone from out there drives all week.

then, if you want to keep up with that stupid comparisson, you best turn your focus to southern ontario where they all drive more in one day just to get to a car pool than we do in a week.

as well, someone who lives in PA and works in FW may be driving more than someone from out there who works in Westfort or on Arthur St.

so trying using logic before posting.

and maybe if you want to do more to reduce greenhouse gases, trying turning off your computer and holding your breath for an hour everyday.

and the "not" wasnt a "joke" its a simple way to try to type sarcasm since too many cant figure it out any way you try.
:P

so angela ----------- maybe I wasn't clear in my request. or maybe it is just easier to avoid the request.

if these turbines really are the devil why is a province with nothing but oil, Alberta, bringing in turbines for wind power. Ahh, don't bother. your group will just make up more unsupported science.

I love the postings here.

Very few look at the big picture, only how it is going to impact them.

Are we polluting the planet. Yeap
Do we need to cut back, yeap
are we willing to do it, yes, just as long as it is my neighbour and not me and make sure you only charge my neigbour and not me.

as for producing our power cheap.

exactly how did these power producing facilities get built. Do we do it. we keep thinking we are entitled to have cheaper power than down east but those facilities belong to the province. that is why everyone pays the same rate.

And when these wind turbines come on stream, we won't be stuck with the higher cost, everyone in Ontario will pay their share because us lazy, pollute the world, don't give a dame about anyone but ourselves whinny folks, have got to get our S**t together and do something to save this planet.

if that means we try and build an economy using solar and wind that maybe makes us the leader in this technology, much like California is doing, then great.

in the meantime, someone below said it best.

get them built already.

while I don't agree with the location per say and again while I think the city big time dropped the ball, I think we have beat this turbine to death.

However, there is a rumour they were responsible for wiping out the dinasaours and they caused the City of Atlantis to sink into the ocean so maybe we should re-think this plan.

I know for sure turbines are the reason my Vikings haven't won a superbowl, that should be reason enough not to have them.

And some of these people drive and vote. No wonder this city is still in the dark ages.

Captain.. I have a 1500sq ft home in South Neebing, no city sewer system (yet I pay full rates) we have some of the worse roads around, so sidewalks etc.. and I paid $5300+ in property taxes. I have a right to complain about the Turbines (regardless of my taxes). I have friends that pay inexcess of $7000 a year in property taxes out here. I built my house 11 years ago, my taxes at that time were $2685.00. What justifies the almost 100% increase??
