For Innova Business Park, more roads will mean more business the city says.

Construction has begun on improving access to Innova Business Park in a $1.5 million attempt to bring more development to the park, which has been mostly vacant for more than15 years.

Extending Innovation Drive to Golf Links Road and Premier Way to the Harbour Expressway will add about 1.5 kilometres of road to the park. Having two more access points could attract diverse developments from box stores to institutional facilities said city project engineer Tom McConnell.

"The idea is that the better the access it will attract more businesses to the business park," he said. "There’s no question that any development especially large scale development benefits the city."

McConnell said gravel roads will be complete by the winter, allowing drivers to access the park in the next couple of months with paving completed next year. traffic along the Harbour Expressway and Golf Links Road may see some minor disruptions during the construction period he said.

roads to nowhere, what's next?

How about we maintain what we have instead of starting these types of pre-election attempts at grabbing votes?

by the way, hows that Mission Island boat launch coming? Last I saw on this site was it was to be open at the end of July.

August has past, and we're up to our crotch in September, still no boat launch.

How about a follow up?

This has got to be one of the worst decisions ever made in Thunder Bay. NObody wants to locate there, so they spend millions MORE dollars to build more roads. If this was actually such a great spot, businesses would move in on their own, without more roads.

As of now, this has been going on, what, about 10 years, and nobody wants to move in. Perhaps the city should LISTEN TO INDUSTRY and give up on this area. The only thing this place might be good for is a stadium. But we can't afford that anyway, because we are broke paying all the union salaries at city hall and with the police.

"more roads will mean more business". I'm pretty sure any developers who are looking for land already know about this area. Putting more roads in does not make people more aware of it.
Also, the expressway is to move about the city quicker and more directly...they typically don't have a bunch of roads off of them other than major arteries. Why is this road so special that it doesn't apply. The road into and out of this property is just fine. Its actually in pretty good shape.

how about encouraging business with tax breaks and stop kyboshing business like Cosco that wanted to come here instead of spending money on a road that may never be used!...wow I can't wait till we have Hobbs in charge!

Yeah because the "If you build it, they will come" attitude has worked so well in the past right? Oh wait...

1.5million? How much was the road resurfacing and water upgrade they did last year? How much in total has this cost us? What's the ROI on this so far? Negative i'm sure for the last 15 years.... Great use of tax dollars. Next round of councilors - please add up the wasted dollars over the last decade and deduct it from our taxes. You obviously have way too much of our money to burn.

The Harbour Expressway was classified as a Controlled Access Road. This means the only vehicle access is for emergency purposes only. Has something changed or are the rules being bent to satisfy certain needs by allowing access to this development off of the Harbour Expressway?

Can't wait until Hobbs gets in and actually welcomes business to Thunder Bay. Hobbs won't be trying to line his own pockets and protect his business from competition like the rest of the current counsel. Can't wait for change.

There are several companies looking at the site (Millennium Acquisitions is the largest of them) and all of them have raised concerns about access and egress at Innova Park. This construction will make them more likely to follow through on their investment.

But I agree with Pie. Urban sprawl is horrible and this area should never have been developed in the first place.

if you try something and it continues to fail for 15 years, do you continue trying it? do you continue to dump money into it "hoping" that something will happen?

the answer should be no....

that said, if there was firm comittments (contracts signed, work begun) in the area, then the expansion would be justified.. I have my doubts that much is going on there right now.

Lol, people calm down. There was a statement earlier "listen to industry." That exactly what they are doing. Industry has said that the main concern with the area is a lack of access. Do you people not remember the mall that was going to go in there? There is interest in the area and this will help to develop it.

The city isn't really as dumb as you think.

Umm deerhunting101 and nads74 nice try but maybe go back to read some past news articles. Council has been very "pro-development" and have welcomed many companies, businesses etc to the city only to have citizens and private business take it to the OMB to stop the progress. Here are some examples that might remind you - Costco was shot down by the Superstore, expansion of the Athletic Club to a north side location was shot down by PUSH, neighbours around a busy expressway tried to get rid of Flying J and now residents of Neebing are fighting the wind park, FOMP put up the fight to stop the development of Prince Arthur's Landing and the private development of condos and a hotel. These are a few that I can come up with off the top of my head. Thunder Bay is finally making progress and moving forward. I have had a lot of friends move back to Thunder Bay lately because of what we have to offer. Just look at the increase in homes sales not to mention the growth in new home construction. It paints a little rosier picture then you would like portrayed. And to be realistic, wouldn't it make sense to expand entrances and exits to the area to gain access off the expressway rather than going around the block to Golf Links Road. The city should have done this years ago but at least it's finally getting done.

This is where the new courthouse should have been built! In the centre of the city, not too far from the police station, and lots of parking space.
