Saying the public seems to be unnerved and that council could use a little help, former mayor and Liberal MP Ken Boshcoff is throwing his name into the at-large race for next month’s municipal election.

The 61-year-old, who spent 17 years on council and six years as mayor between 1997 and 2003 and holds the Liberal nomination in the federal Thunder Bay-Rainy River Riding, earlier this month decided not to make a run at the mayor’s chair, despite rising pressure to do so.

A four-year term as a councilor was a much better fit, he said.

“I feel that with my experience in business, in government and in community I have something that could offer city council to get through the next little while,” Boshcoff said earlier this week.

Though a federal election could call him away from council, Boshcoff said it’s not uncommon for federal candidates to put their name forward, pointing to Mayor Richard Harvey in Nipigon, who last month earned the Conservative nomination in Thunder Bay-Superior North, but will still seek another term at the municipal level.

“There might not be an election for a long time,” Boshcoff said. “I want to stay more involved. I’ve been doing a lot of business stuff, but this will give me a chance to (keep active politically). I have a lot of experience with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and boards and commission. I think council can use a bit of help right now.”

He’s counting on name recognition to help him over the top in an at-large race that had swelled to 12 at press time, not including Boshcoff, who planned to file on Thursday or Friday.

“I sure hope so,” he said. “I hope people will remember some of the things I’ve been involved in.”

Also in the running are incumbents Iain Angus, Larry Hebert and Aldo Ruberto, former councillors Lawrence Timko and Dick Waddington, and first-timers Cindy Crowe, Beatrice Metzler, Gerald Graham, Sharon Ostberg, Syndey Petit, Darren Roberts and Norm Staal.

Coun. Rebecca Johnson is expected to file this week and Coun. Frank Pullia is expected to make a decision on Thursday whether to re-offer at large or take another run for mayor.

As far as Liberals go, Kenny isn't a bad guy. He can vote along party lines and be an Iggy yesman as well as any of them. Actually I didn't mind Kenny as Mayor. Remember that he had to put up with the Council from hell (Santa, Roy etc) for several years, and he did a reasonable job.

But I think that Kenny is confusing the daylights out of everyone with his logic. Does he really want to be a councillor or an MP? If he gets on as a councillor, he will vacate the position, if he gets in as a Liberal Mp???? I think that this fact will lose Kenny some votes. What he seems to be saying is that I'd love to be a councilor, although I'd love it more if I was an MP.

Gees, make up your mind Kenny. Love to see you on council but even you don't sound that convincing.

Come on Kenny, Why? Why would you risk vacating the seat if you won the Federal Seat? I think Ken is saying he has no chance to win against John Rafferty thats why I need to be involved and be on council to stay relevant! Poor move cause it only hurts Thunder Bay more then helps it. Lets hope Frank Pullia files for Mayor today and make this a real race for Mayor!

To Pullia4mayor:

Lets hope that Frank throws in the towel and decides to get a real job (like he said he was). |He hasn't won the mayors race previously when he let his name stand. What has changed that will convince voters to chosse him now. If anything else, he has done nothing on council. He will be the lamest mayor we're had in a long time. Hobbs can make this a tight race as long as there's not a three way contest.

Do the right thing Frank - retire and let someone else take over.

Halleluyah A ray of hope is starting to shine on Thunder Bay! Lynn, Timko, Kenny, Dick, Syd Petit, Ian ,Paul,Andy Wolff,Henry Wojack, Sargon. This could be "The DReam Team" we would be back on our feet shortly. Evil spending would be curtailed. The Taxpayer would be put in his rightful spot and all would be well again. So when you see that "VOTING VAN" on Oct 25 go up to it Knock on the door and say I'm here to elect the dream team go in and VOTE. These people and our city need your help. Remember Only You Can Prevent Lame Politicians!

I've made up my mind that I'm not going to vote for anyone who has ever been on city council before. Sorry, Ken.

I hope Pullia does the right thing, runs for at-large and throws his support for mayor behind Hobbs.

are you kidding me...fresh blood is needed, not a mixture of old and new, people that are set in their ways and ones that have made the same mistakes again and again need to be gone. Half of your dream team list should just retire now!

yer joking, what did that Council do for the city?

You want to get rid of this council? What was the city like four years ago? We relied 100% on our mill industry that was falling apart. Now, we are more diversified, have the marina going in, and the city actually has a future. I know the good ol'days sound good and rosy, but some of us actually want to enjoy our city and have a place to work.

Be careful what you ask for, you may just get it.

wow, I sincerely hope the "existing Council hasnt saved my life and made me whole" people who would waste a vote for a person like Hobbes forget to vote... its out only hope. Time to grow up people and stop blaming all the ills in your life on Councillors. Honestly, they dont have that much influence and power over the world, time to deal with it.

What's that saying Three strikes and your out? A unimpressive councillor of the past. A ineffective mayor who lost control of his council to one Mr Santa and his 4 colleges which ended up costing the taxpayer of this city a MILLION DOLLARS in a wrongful dismissal suit by a former City Manager A ineffective MP who's only claim to fame was a obscene gesture directed at the caucus of one of the parties in the HOC and had to apologize to the speaker and MP's for his misbehaviour.

advocate, the marina is nothing good.

spending tax payer dollars to revive the "economy" is the equivalent of standing in a bucket, grabbing the handle, and trying to lift yourself up.

Sorry Ken. Too liberal for me.

and whenever I hear the name Rebecca Johnson... I just shudder in agony.

Talk about a copy cat, Harvey wants the best of both worlds, he knows the PC party has a slim chance up here so he still whats mayors chair if all else fails, (pay check). Now Ken would never do this 2 faced move, like someone else (Harvey) has. Since there has been no public outcry over Harveys motives, Ken figures he can get away with it to. Richard and Ken decide where you want to serve, the people need true honest leaders dedicated to the area they serve, not someone wanting a bigger pension.

bam bam, I don't disagree with your posting but

does everyone forget not long ago Rebecca Johnson did the same thing when she ran for MPP while sitting on council.

I find either situation distasteful. while it is not a law, I think you should step down if you wish to seek another office.

and virdiramo tried to get the Liberal nomination in the north side while sitting as a councillor. this stuff happens often but it shouldn't only no one was criticizing it back when johnson and Joe were doing it.

What's wrong with having a backup plan? I'm sure anyone who's lost their jobs in the past wished they had something to fall back on. This is a non-issue.

I used to have a lot of respect for Mr. Boshcoff when he was on council and as mayor. So much respect that when he was seeking the Liberal Party nomination I joined the Liberal party
(though I have never voted Liberal in my life) just so I could vote for him to get in. His display in Ottawa though made me change my views on him and his policies. I think when the voting is done he will get a huge slap in the face when he isn't voted on council. He has let many in Thunder Bay down recently.

It is unfortunate that Boshcoff is running. He is a poor politician at best and is just confusing people with his mumble jumble speak.

His business is so time consuming that he could not be the mayor, but since he will do nothing as a councilor he can run for council.

This is nothing but a self serving move that has nothing to do with the good of Thunder Bay.

Pawn:

I wouldn't be too harsh on Kenny, he's actually a nice guy. But he's really sending out the wrong message here and I agree, confusing the heck out of voters. I can see how citizens are coming to the conclusion that Kenny wants to feed at the taxpayers trough and get his federal pension in place. He's Liberal and has this self serving thing of entitlement on his brain.

I do recall Kenny stating that he was too busy with his business to be the Mayor. But he is the Liberal nominee federally. And now he is hoping that name recognition will help him secure a seat on Council. So if he is successful on his run as an MP, he will vacate his council seat. Which means that the next candidate at the polls will replace Kenny. So when you vote for Kenny, you may be voting for another candidate if Kenny gets in. Confused yet?

Kenny - drop your run for council so that we know that you're serious. If you can't do that, then drop your run at the Liberal seat. They aren't going to win anyway. Just make up your mind, one way or the other. If you can't do that, then I can't blame voters for rejecting you in both elections.

Yes as mayor he pushed to have the casino and then bargained for so little to come back to our city and he actually thought it was a good trade. We were supposed to get 10 bus loads a day - haven't yet heard of 1. Dozens More Easy Money Marts have popped up, more pawn shops etc have come to life. This "wonderful thing" you claim is to do our city good - but has destroyed so many lives - and yet it seems the bus loads are still going to the border not here. Thanks Kenny you won't get my vote!

No confusion here! Just another Conservative/Liberal Politician doing his thing to help the people provide him with more benefits to help him help them help him. Ooooooh sound like a viscious cirle doesn't it?
I think the first question should be "If elected to City Council and a Federal election is called will you run as a Federal Candidate?" and not just Kenny but all candidates should be asked that question.
