Eight students and a teacher from Lakehead University have been located safe and sound.

On Aug. 26, the group went kayaking on Lake Superior but no one had heard from them since Sunday.

At dawn Thursday, a Hercules aircraft from Winnipeg began a search and the kayaking students and teacher were found shortly after.

They are all in good health and no injuries were reported. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

Hmmmmmmmmm, can you say "float plan"?
Must not have covered that yet in Outdoor Rec.

Actually, all ORPT sea kayaking trips file a float plan with both the University as well as with the Coast Guard. From now on however, I'm sure they will also be sure to file one with you too, just to be on the safe side.

So quick to judge and condem a Thunder Bay trait. Let's hang 'em now and ask what their story was later! Sarcasm Sucks

In this era of safety: I cannot believe that they didn`t have a satellite phone with them. They are available from TBAYTEL, for example. Every reasonable precaution needs to be taken in case of accident, illness, wildlife, or any unforseen emergency--like getting LOST!

Any more details? Like did they get lost, did they have some troubles? Why were they gone missing?
A few more details would be nice.

You need more details before you start making uninformed comments. Satellite phones are not guaranteed. They do not always work as they found out. They never were lost, only late because of weather which by the way knocked out the satellite signals. It would have been nice if more information was filed in the story so as not to make Lakehead University look like they went out ill prepared. They have been doing these trips for years and know all the procedures necessary for a safe expedition.

The students were never "lost" They always knew were they were. They also knew that it was unsafe to try to kayak back to Red Rock due to the high winds. So they waited. The weather conditions prohibited them from contacting anybody. The Hercules did go and find them but the students were okay and just waiting for the wind to die down. They kayaked back on their own and returned safely. There is a lot of info missing in this story and I am very disappointed in whoever wrote it.
