The Ministry of Natural Resources reports that there are no active forest fires burning in the province right now, an unusual situation for the province in mid-September.

As the annual forest fire season winds down, the Ministry is reporting a rather uneventful fire year in Northwestern Ontario. To date, there have been 351 reported forest fires in the region, which is up considerably from the 174 recorded in 2009.

But the 2010 numbers are still down significantly from the region’s five-year average of 626 a year.

The amount of damages those fires have caused is also unusual for this region. So far about 9,600 hectares of land has burned in the North West Region.

Last year this region witnessed 13,000 hectares burned by forest fires. The five year average is more than 45,000-hectares burned.
