Police are looking for the man who robbed a north-side credit union at gun-point Friday afternoon.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials say a male suspect robbed the Northern Credit Union, located at 697 Red River Road, just before 1:30 p.m.

The male suspect was armed with a gun when he approached the teller and demanded money, police said.

No one was injured as a result of the robbery, but the man did leave the credit union with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police say the man drove away from the scene in a tan coloured SUV.

Police describe the suspect as being a Caucasian man standing six-feet tall with a medium build. He had dark hair and dark facial hair. He wore a mask and blue cargo pants at the time of the robbery.

Anyone with information about this robbery is being encouraged to contact Thunder Bay Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

Did they call out the K9 Unit? There is no mention of it. The dog could have tracked the culprit to his/her vehicle......maybe

umm what?? i hope your user name is a reference to your comment. what would the k9 dog do in that situation? for your information, k9 follows a track set by the suspects scent. the article stated the male went into a tan coloured SUV and fled the scene therefore leaving no scent for the k9 to follow. i wish people would post intellegent, worth reading comments on here sometimes.

Wow...give the dog a break, people. How do you know what kind of scent trail he has to follow at every call? Do you think it's going to be perfect for him every time? Especially when any suspect could jump into a vehicle at anytime! I don't understand all this criticism of a DOG!

I'd like to see you guys do better....hahahahaha.

It isn't the dog that is being critisized. The dog is probably the most deserving employee there.

So in the last week we have had 3 robberies of pharmacies and now a bank robbery. Nope Thunder Bay does not have a crime problem at all!

Why didn't the police look into their crystal balls and predict that someone would rob the credit union and then have officers standing in the back waiting to apprehend the robber. total waste i say! Chief Herman needs crystal balls that tell the future for all his officers! and Dogs that can follow the scent of an individual SUV because i think technology is so good that every vehicle leaves a different scent like people!

Its almost to the point where entry to either drug stores or banks should call for a double-door type deal where you are "locked inbetween 2 doors" until you show your id to gain 1 foot into the premesis, and at the same time that a pic of your face taken to help stop more robberies from happening... Regardless of the price, it seems thats whats called for now here in Thunder Bay in 2011...The joys of owning a business and keeping your employees safe...Im sure someone will knock this idea of mine too, but it seems these type of places NEED to step security up asap before someone gets hurt or killed, let alone the peeps that have already been traumatized by these recent incidents...

unknowncronic - oddly enough, the apple credit union has exactly that type of security system you mentioned, so clearly your idea is good. I have seen them use it every time i am in their building. However, it didn't successfully deter the last robber that attended their location.

I totally agree. Many post on this website without any thought. We should be glad to have the opportunity to post here. The editor should restrict more stupid comments, I think. The daily paper doesn't dare offer this to their readers, they'd be called on their biased reporting too often.

Back to the story ....... Ranma has pointed out the numerous robberies lately in our city. Obviously, we have many people in desperate situations, and we have to get to the root of the problem. Security at individual business is important, but the problem will continue until these desperate people find a legitimate way to deal with their needs. It's not even safe to walk the streets at night. Or be in your home with doors unlocked.

Maybe we should start addressing the real problem here....why does Thunder Bay have 3 methadone clinics, and metro Toronto only has one? No secret what all these robberies are after.....imagine, a pharmacy a block from the newest clinic being robbed...not all the addicts are satisfied with their daily fix, courtesy of the Ontario Govt....just curious..are these clinics locally owned and run (hope the sacrasm is noted in that last statement) Just another example of southern Ontario reaping the benefits at a cost to Thunder Bay

Robberies will always happen when lazy people cant be bothered to earn their way in life.

It seems like its a common theme these days to reward and accept laziness. Is it any wonder why crime is on the rise?

Just in all the comments thus far we see the blame being put on everything other than the actual lowlife bum who threatened peoples lives with a gun.

It does not matter why this criminal lowlife did this, all that matters is what was done.

Lets catch this loser and show him how much we enjoy him treating our society like this...

..but I bet our liberal courts will be more concerned about his upbringing, homelife, and substance abuse issues to actually do their job..which is to administer a punishment so severe it deters all others from following in this stupid path.

Stiffer penalties is what the public needs here, and we need them NOW.
