Regional Research Institute may receive $4M for isotope-producing cyclotron

It appears the federal government has set aside $4 million to help cover the cost of an isotope-producing cyclotron for Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.

The money will be made available if Tuesday’s federal budget is approved, said Institute chief executive officer Michael Power, caught by surprise by the announcement made by Minister of State for Science and Technology Gary Goodyear.

Power said the machine, which will be housed in its own facility at one of three locations – owned by and adjacent to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre – will allow for much earlier detection of cancer cells than is presently possible.

That in turn should let radiologists and nuclear medicine doctors save lives, he said.

“They’ll be able to better diagnose disease. You can put a million cancer cells on the tip of a ballpoint pen. These isotopes excite cells. In fact cancer cells will digest the isotope and you’ll be able to see cancer at its earliest stage,” Power said.

“And you’ll be able to see it as it moves through the body as opposed to waiting for it to be isolated in a tumor.”

It will also give physicians a better idea of how treatment is progressing, he said.

“What you don’t want as a cancer patient is to go through six cycles of very toxic chemotherapy and as the result of a CT scan, (see) that it hasn’t had any impact,” Power said. “You want to be in a situation where in real time you can see if the tumor is responding to the chemotherapy.”

Power called it the front-end of a health-care revolution.

Presently isotopes, which have very short half-lives, sometimes as little as 90 minutes, are shipped to Thunder Bay from southern Ontario, usually Hamilton or Toronto.

It’s not uncommon for them to die en route.

The new generation of isotopes, which TBRRI researchers hope to develop and perfect, will surpass the current standard, at the same time ensuring usable isotopes are readily available for use at the regional hospital and other institutions in Northern Ontario.

“We’ll clearly be selling some of what we produce into communities like Sudbury, Timmins, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie,” Power said. “But some of the isotopes will be so sub-specialized that patients will have to come to Thunder Bay to be treated.”

Power said the cyclotron and the radial pharmacy to house it won’t come cheaply.

The lab will cost about $10 million to build, with the cyclotron itself making up about $3.2 million of the cost. It's expected to be part of a larger 80,000 to 100,000 square foot research facility planned for the hospital grounds in the next three years.

The City of Thunder Bay has committed $1.5 million, with another $4 million coming from the province. TBRRI is kicking in the other $500,000.

Power said he expects it will take at least two years before the project is up and running.

MP Greg Rickford (Cons., Kenora), said the investment is part of his government's commitment to the region's growing knowledge-based economy, a plan that will benefit all of Northwestern Ontario.

"I'm very thrilled," he said, though expressed uncertainty as to whether or not the federal portion of the funding will see the light of day with talk swirling that opposition parties will vote down the budget when it goes for approval in the House of Commons, automatically triggering a federal election.

Lets see...... surprise announcements of various huge amounts of $$ being dolled out all over the country in this budget.

My opinion: The government knows this budget will never be passed, and as such are trying to make all the other parties look as bad as possible by throwing huge amounts of fictitious money around that will never be paid out so that they can demonize the opposition for quashing it.

Heck they could offer a $100000000 check for each cdn. citizen, because they know they will never have to pay.

I hope the public is not falling for this ploy.

Great news! Just another piece of the puzzle that moves Thunder Bay away from a city of yesterday to a modern city with a diversified economy.

I love this announcement. Thunder Bay is really (a little surprising to me) becoming a medical research power. With more of this investment, Thunder Bay could become a major medical isotope producer. This should also raise the prestige of Lakehead University and it may attract more high-income, well-educated people to Thunder Bay which in turn increases our tax base.

An issue with the article, though.

"Presently isotopes, which have very short half-lives, sometimes as little as 90 minutes, are shipped to Thunder Bay from southern Ontario, usually Hamilton or Toronto."

Which isotopes? Isotopes used in medicine? Because some isotopes have half-lives of microseconds (these aren't used in medicine, obviously). Which isotopes will this machine produce? Why those isotopes versus another?

Overall, I'm not complaining about the announcement. I love it. But I wish the government would actually listen to our needs and instead chip us a few million to put an expansion on the hospital so we can accomodate more beds. Or build a long-term care facility.

I think we're putting the cart before the horse here. What's the point of having the latest and greatest medical technology if you have to wait five hours in the hallway of the Regional to benefit from it?

The Ontario Government gave St. Joes around 100 million to build the CEISS (Long term home). They are building it this year, they have the foundation laid for one building and they are adding another 100 beds which will help to take the pain from the hospital. This will open beds at the hospital and make the process quicker. The hospital at any one time can have 70 seniors staying there waiting for a long term bed.

Shame on Rickford and the Conservatives for holding this money hostage in their Budget, when they know the government is facing contempt of Parliament charges and might fall.

Thunder Bay has been asking for this money for two years now. The fact that they would wait that long and all of a sudden, when they are facing defeat, announce it and use it to play politics with is a slap in the face to all the cancer patients and their families in the region.

Harper's pulling the same thing as when Joe Commuzie was in.He will do anything to stay in power.I hope the NDP and opposition don't take the carrot and stick with a few crumbs. It's probably another lie.All they are going to wind up with is the stick(shaft). If the money for the research centre is there now it will be there in a couple of months no matter who wins.

More spin than the cyclotron itself!

Where are the cyclotrons in Canada?
There are eight cyclotron facilities in Canada, one of which, the TRIUMF cyclotron in Vancouver, has five cyclotrons and principally uses them for research.

The others owners are:

Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton, Alta.,
Hamilton Health Sciences, Hamilton, Ont.,
Ottawa Heart Institute, Ottawa.
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto.
Montreal Neurological Institute, Montreal.
University of Sherbrooke Hospital, Sherbrooke, Que.,
Pharmalogic, a privately owned company in Montreal.

An additional seven cyclotrons are expected to be up and running either this year or in early 2010, located in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, London, Ont., Halifax, and two more in Toronto.

Best of luck Michael. Unfortunately our local NDP clowns are hell bent on taking down the Conservative government so you may have to wait until the election is held. With a majority Conservative government as a result you should have no problem receiving the funding in the long run. Go Maureen Comuzzi Go!

is this how Canada is to be governed. We will FINALLY SUPPORT YOUR HEALTH IN THUNDER BAY, IF ONLY YOU WILL VOTE FOR US.

They have had a long time to deliver this. Every other party stepped up to the plate long ago on this project but now we will finally get it if only those "bad opposition people" do not force us in to an election. This is disgusting.

People's lives are possibly at stake here. The media was filled with isotope shortages around the globe some time ago. This facility would not only assist that shortage it would make diagnosis faster for people who live here. If you want to support us Mr. Rickford, then spend the money without making it part of the budget. Spend it now. I am sure you would get all party support on a motion to spend $4 million in Thunder Bay to deal with the isotope issue. Remove it from the budget and do what is right otherwise you are playing politics with people's lives.

This action is guaranteering one less vote for your party in Thunder Bay. One is not a big deal but hopefully others might feel the same with this crass political move.

More great news for Thunder Bay. It is unfortunate that many in this city choose to speak ill instead of looking forward. congrats to those with foresight and vision on helping to revitilize and grow this fine city to what it can be.
For those that want good paying jobs, here they are. However you have to earn them with knowledge and education.
Wait, that is avaialble here too!

Don't get me wrong, ibrando. I know exactly what this is. The Conservatives are bribing us to vote for them. This is one of the target ridings.

The way I see it, it's a sort of win-win for us. If the Conservatives get voted out, that's awesome. The NDP or Liberals will probably go forward with building this anyway.

If the Conservatives stay, we can hold their feet to the fire and make them build this and Thunder Bay gets an improvement. It comes at a cost of a few more years of Harper and his cronies, but every cloud has a silver lining, I guess.

I find your choice of Conservatives striking considering you're on every news story about a pot bust screaming it should be legalized (and I agree with you). If that's a major issue to you, you're definitely with the wrong party. The NDP are the most likely of the big three to push to legalize it.

IBRANDO

Did I miss something in those postings you are criticzing.

I saw people criticizing the gov't for the politics of this issue. Two years after the request, long after the Province committed to the project and just before a possible budget non-confidence vote, the Conservatives say we will fund this project if the budget passes.

You would like us to get down on our knees and maybe kiss their ring?????????????????

You constantly harp about the Provincial Liberals and if they did this, you would be screaming. This smacks of politics. Pure and simple.

I agree with Trevor, take it out of the budget and commit to the project regardless of what happens. Period. No politics with lives and do it because it is the right thing to do.

That's the point. Everyone wants the project. Everyone here would likely say great news for T.Bay, some of us just don't want to close our eyes, plug our nose, and swallow our tongue in order to accept $4 million from a gov't that has proven for to long, that they barely know we exist.

That's the issue. You are either extremely naive or you just hope we don't call you on your simplistic political approach to this particular issue.

and as someone who constantly speaks to the good around here, I will applaud the money if it gets here, but that's the point isn't it.

The province's only condition is, the Fed's need to step up to the plate and match it. The Fed's condition is, "BUT WE NEED TO STAY IN POWER".

I think there is a small difference in approaches, don't you.
