The man accused of killing a 32-year-old Thunder Bay man is dead, police confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Officials with the OPP say Dwane Turk, 55, of Oliver-Paipoonge, was found dead in his cell at the North Bay District Jail Tuesday night. Turk faced a second-degree murder charge following the death of his son-in-law, Christopher Jean.

North Bay Police Service spokesman Ted Whittle said the Northeast Region coroner’s office has launched an investigation into Turk’s death.

Whittle said he could not provide any more information at this time.

OPP Northeast Region Det. Staff Sgt. Jeff Dagg confirmed late last week that police were investigating the death of Jean, and that they had a suspect in custody.

Sgt. Dagg said OPP officers responded to a call on Thursday in James Township, near Elk Lake. When officers arrived they found Jean’s body.

The body was sent to Sudbury where a post-mortem examination was scheduled. Turk was later charged with second-degree murder. He was scheduled to appear in Temiskaming Shores court on April 1.
