One person is dead and another was sent to the hospital after a highway crash Wednesday afternoon.

A westbound dump truck collided with an eastbound pickup truck on Highway 11-17 just east of Highway 527 to Armstrong around 12:50 p.m.

The vehicles involved in the crash caught fire and the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the dump truck was taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with non life-threatening injuries.

“Everything is under investigation at this point,” OPP traffic staff Sgt. Ken Mantey said. “There’s still a search continuing to ensure there isn’t anybody else involved.”

Shuniah’s fire department, the OPP and MNR fire rangers responded to the scene and as of 2 p.m., the fire crews were still working on extinguishing the fire and ensuring it wouldn’t spread.

“The majority of the fire is out but there’s still a bit of smoke coming and we’re just letting the fire crews deal with that first before we get in to investigate,” said Mantey.

Thunder Bay OPP are asking if anyone witnessed the collision to contact the police at (807)939-2133.
