Gov.-Gen. David Johnston is recognizing the accomplishments of two prominent Thunder Bay residents.

Lawyer David Shannon and physician Ruth Kajander are two of 50 Canadians being appointed to the Order of Canada.

Kajander was honoured for her dedication to mental health care, while Shannon, a quadriplegic, for his advocacy of Canadians living with disabilities.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II and recognizes a lifetime of achievement and contributions in all sectors of Canadian society.

Kajander and Shannon are the first people from Thunder Bay to be invested into the Order of Canada since bandleader and noted David Letterman sidekick Paul Shaffer in December 2007.
