NDP MP Bruce Hyer is calling on Treasury Board president Tony Clement to step down amid questions of how a secret, $50 million “slush fund” was funneled into his Parry Sound-Muskoka riding ahead of last year’s G8 summit.

Clement came under fire after federal NDP officials released documents obtained under freedom of information laws that showed the then Industry Minister personally monitored the flow of cash from the G8 legacy fund through his constituency office.

“I absolutely do,” Hyer said when asked if Clement should resign or Prime Minister Steven Harper should start the ball rolling himself.

“I think that Mr. Harper should remove him and if Mr. Harper fails to, then it’s clear evidence that Mr. Harper either doesn’t care or that he was complicit in this and that this was not just a Tony Clement malfeasance, but was orchestrated by the party.

Hyer (Thunder Bay-Superior North) agreed with opposition charges the legacy fund spending was designed to avoid oversight of the country’s auditor general, adding it’s one more reason FedNor needs its own ministry, similar to economic development agencies in other parts of the country.

The money was handed out through FedNor, the economic development agency responsible for Northern Ontario.

“To find out it was just used to help Tony Clement get re-elected in his own riding is, I think, pretty unacceptable to virtually all Canadians, except for maybe the people who voted for Tony in his riding,” said Hyer, reached by phone on Monday while in transit in Ottawa.

“(FedNor) should be much more closely tied to local regional control, with a board of directors from the North that recommends and makes decisions so that when communities apply for special projects, that it’s open, that it’s accountable, that it’s good for the North, not for a minister in Ottawa or southern Ontario.

The second-term representative also said it’s disturbing the government hid the fund from the auditor general when an investigation was launched.

“This smells like a cover-up, with secret meetings to divvy up $50 million in pork-barrel projects.”

The federal Liberals have called on auditor general John Wiersema to reconsider the decision not to do a value-for-money audit on the way the $50-million was disbursed.

Markham-Unionville MP John McCallum wrote a letter to Wiersema on Monday, and published it on his constituency website.
“The new information appears to suggest that then Minister of Industry (Clement) conducted his own application process for these projects ant that this process was administered not by the professional public service, but by the minister’s own political staff.”

A spokesman for Wiersema on Monday told the Toronto Star, however, that the auditor general would not be re-opening the file, while a spokeswoman for Clement said there Is nothing new in the NDP allegations and that the pertinent information was provided during the investigation.

The legacy fund money was supposed to help Clement’s riding prepare for hosting the G8 Summit last June and was spent on projects including gazebos, parks, public toilets and other beautification projects, many of which were hours away from the summit site in Huntsville, Ont.

Now if the money went to help people in the Parry Sound region I woulnt mind but if there was any type of fraud on the part of Clement where he bought himself something with any of the money," he should go to jail 15 yr's.

Why don't you say something of substance? Does Hyer's electability outside of Thunder Bay have ANYTHING to do with Tony Clement's alleged slush fund? No? Then why don't you go have a long, hard think (I know that'll be a challenge for you) and come back when you can address the points he's made. Typically that's what one does, rather than making a snarky, unrelated remark.

What is "sad" Undecided, is your absence of outrage about an obvious breach of ethics and trust demonstrated by elected representatives; pathetic;

Where did this statement come from; "The money was handed out through FedNor, the economic development agency responsible for Northern Ontario." PLEAES SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE!!!

I find it very sad that the NDP are blaming FedNor for what they are calling a "scandal." The public servants at this respected organization of Industry Canada have not mishandled funds until shown otherwise. TAKE ON THE POLITICAL MASTER!!!

Also, why doesn't the NDP follow up with the Auditor General's report and their office. Here is the report link to the report regarding the Summits and the Legacy Fund;

Lets do this properly and not play games!!! The NDP are desparate for attention and this is a new low in politics.

The fact that Clement and his buddies had towns submit applications to his constituency office, and not Fednor (and the applications were approved at secret meetings with Clement and his staff) is bad enough to for a charge of political interference in the process.

But the fact that they hid the whole process from the police and auditor general investigations means they might be brought up on obstruction of justice charges. Sad that millions meant for developing the North was squandered on G8 pork-barrel projects in the south. And they haven't increased funding for Fednor for years because they say the "cupboard is bare"!

I just love reading that Mr. Clement should go to jail. After all he is guilty. The proof is in what Mr. Hyer said. That should be enough for anyone. Just make an accusation and send the bum away.

But then T.Bayflash puts up a posting suggesting this is all a bunch of hooey. I hope tbayflash didn't use any facts to back up his posting because around here facts are meaningless. Lets send him to jail because Bruce made an allegation.

But if that were not enough it gets even better from good old Brucie. If the Prime Minister does not ask for Clements resignation, then the Prime Minister must have been involved on behalf of the party. What proof do we have of that brilliant Brucie allegation, well, the PM did not ask Clement to resign, therefore he must have been involved. Well draw and quarter the PM if he does not do what Brucie said.

I am prepared to accept the possibility that there may have been wrong-doing but nothing in this story has so far convinced me of that. Are the people so quick to jump to conclusions willing to accept the possibility that everything was done above board.

We have fallen so far that the mere allegation is enough to convince people that someone else is guilty of something. How scary is that in what it says about members of our society. And how bad should that make our MP look for this kind of action.

We have four years of listening to these two tell us everything that is wrong with our PM and his government. Just watch folks and look for any story, any comment, anything that suggests the gov't is doing something positive. It is not going to happen. We won't get much in T.Bay from these two guys except exaggertation and accusation.

What part of documents illustrating the fact that Clement stole taxpayer money to spruce up his riding do you not understand? What part of the last Auditor General compiling a report to the effect of the Conservatives asking for money for one thing and then using it for something else do you not understand? If the NDP had been in power and this had taken place under their watch, would you be so quick to defend them?

I really love the hypocrisy in this country. The NDP get a temporary leader with previous ties to the Bloc, and all hell breaks loose. A high-ranked Conservative Party member is under investigation by the Opposition for possibly STEALING TAX DOLLARS TO SECURE HIS RE-ELECTION, and that's just the NDP looking for attention. What part of criminal activity do you not understand?

"If the Prime Minister does not ask for Clements resignation, then the Prime Minister must have been involved on behalf of the party. What proof do we have of that brilliant Brucie allegation, well, the PM did not ask Clement to resign, therefore he must have been involved"

That generally indicates complacency, yes. If the NDP were in power, and a member of their party pulled this, the Conservatives would be DEMANDING his/her resignation at the slightest hint of a scandal! They would never let it go; you want to criticise Hyer for suggesting Clement be put aside? Besides, Harper himself has already shown a disregard for what he wastes tax money on. Why else would he take a Canadian Forces jet to go see a hockey game? I don't know if you realise, but things like that cost quite a lot of money. The taxpayers of this country should be mailing bills to 24 Sussex Drive and wherever the hell Tony Clement lives, because we're never going to see any constructive use of it!

comrad, no I do get it. You are the perfect example. Let me quote you

.............What part of documents illustrating the fact that Clement stole taxpayer money.......................

The last time I checked stealing was against the law. Anyone charged here with a crime or has Mr. Clement got control of the RCMP as well. As I said before but maybe I went to fast for you to comprehend. I will dumb it down.

There may have been wrong doing. I will not jump to conclusions that he is innocent.

BUT

He may not have done anything wrong. will you stop jumping to conclusions that he has.

I for one am not prepared to condemn anyone simply on the word of this MP. Maybe you should think a little longer before using words like Stole

one more comrad,

according to today's paper the allegation is that Minister Clement, while still Minister met with people to determine which projects qualified for funding.

Two days later some of those same people
( from his riding, people he likely knows ), endorsed him and it was posted on Clement's campaign website.

Because of THAT, the allegations of stealing money for votes have surfaced.

Wow, that is some ironclad case they have there.

This is typical political bull. Throw it out there. Hope some of it sticks and maybe fool your constituents so that they think you are doing something instead of realizing that you are doing nothing to make the lives of those who live here better. Last time I checked, I thought that was his and John's job. Instead we get this from Bruce, and fortune telling from John.

That according to today's paper was the information taken from the freedom of information request that has led to these accusations without any evidence to back them up.

NOW comrad and others of your ilk, the ball is in your court. Either prove that this guy or our Prime Minister has actually committed a crime, or give us all a rest from your dribble and move on to another topic.
