With negotiations at a standstill, college support staff is on standby for a possible strike.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which has about 280 support staff members at Confederation College, put out a bulletin on their website Monday stating that discussions with management last week were disappointing. The statement also mentioned that members were prepared to walk away from the table if negotiations didn’t improve.

Staff members were told they should not only be prepared, but also expect a strike to happen.

Adair Conlon, vice-president of OPSEU Local 737, said the union will go back to the table next week but so far, there hasn’t been any movement from management since talks began in July.

“Our members are preparing for a strike,” Conlon said. “We’re hoping that we can avoid that at the bargaining table. At this point we’re hoping our team can encourage management to look at our proposals and come to an agreement.”

The union has asked management to look at wages, removing some benefits and dealing with part-time workers replacing full-time positions.

Negotiations have been difficult and it appears that management doesn’t want to bargain, she said.

“We need good jobs in Thunder Bay and without those good jobs we can’t support the community,” she said.

“If we don’t meet a collective agreement by Sept. 1 then we may be in a strike position. The last thing we want to do is impede our students. Students are our number one job and many students work side-by-side with us. We want them to have full-time jobs when they finish their education.”

She added they are looking to have part-time members join the bargaining team.

Confederation College president Jim Madder said he hopes there wouldn’t be a strike, but would do everything possible to support students if there was one.

“We really hope this doesn’t happen and we really hope there’s a settlement,” Madder said.

“From my understanding, settlements in the past have settled in a day or so of the strike date. So we actually don’t know if there is going to be a strike or not, but we hope there isn’t but if there is one we do have some planning here. We will work to try and support our students the best we can.”

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union needs to have thier agreement to expire right at the start of summer so if they want to strike, let them strike during the summertime when they are ususally not working...

Incorrect. The support staff work all summer. Some faculty members do not work from mid June to mid August. The faculty union is not negotiating at this time. It is the support staff who is negotiating.

It's "Ontario Public Service Employees Union" not "Thunder Bay Public Service Employees Union". The vote was across Ontario, not just here.

Yawn.... the usual. The union members will make their demands, threaten to strike just before classes start, the college will have no option but to cave to their demands, tuition will go up again next year in an amount equal to the raise given. The tail is wagging the dog, and the students are the ones who will lose, as they always do. Tuitions will just keep going up, as will student debt.

Ontario Public Employees Union did not pick the time their contract ends. And summer time has to be the busiest time, in June is when we start to prepare for fall semester so yes we are working.

Negotiations 101:

Many unions have the right to strike...many threaten to strike so that it might help meet their demands or better themselves in negiotations, no different then a company might use the lock out card...the key for both parties...can you afford to go out on strike and is it worth it. Sometimes, it is who will blink first.
And I think the Union had a part to play, as well as the company on the date the contract ends...no different if they wanted to extend the life of the contract...I believe they are negotiated)

To Steven: The support staff can strike and students still attend classes as normal. Also, we have nothing to do with tuition prices, they are determined by the ministry and we are told what the prices will be... And Sandstorm: Ya lets just do what were told, frozen wages for 5 years, take away the benefits we have fought for for the last 20 years, hire more part-time staff so there are less voices at the bargaining table and we can get rid of all the full-time staff. GREAT IDEA!!

In 5 years minimum wage will almost be equal to what I make now(including yearly raises), but thats ok, thats why I went to school for three years and paid thousands of dollars, so people with no specialized skills or education can make the same wages as I/we do...
