‘Support’ for students

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com
While there might be some delays during a strike at Confederation College, officials from both sides say they support the students.

Ontario Public Sector Employees Union Local 731 vice-president Adair Conlon said even though her members are on the picket line outside of the college, they’d much rather be inside with the students as the first day of school kicked off Tuesday.

“We do support them and we’re hoping to be back to work," Conlon said.

But so far there has been no movement in talks between the union and colleges across the province.

Some students may think that the workers are trying to impede them, but Conlon said the fight is about keeping good paying jobs for the students who will become part of the workforce soon.

"Management seems to be looking at a two-tiered system where new workers end up coming in with a lower wage and lesser benefits," Conlon said.

With over 1,700 students registered so far, Confederation College president Jim Madder said the striking workers have been doing a great job at not delaying people too much and he appreciates the patience people on both sides of the line have shown.

"I think the people on the line are keeping that line going," Madder said.

"It’s about safety and patience. Let’s just take our time here Some of our service will take longer because we currently miss the people that are on the line now but right now it’s OK."

They were nice enough even though some students were delayed up to 30 minutes. The question I have is, on the paper they were handing out the presidents number telling us to 'call him and tell him that they want back inside' but there fight is with the ministry of universities and colleges.

As well, why isn't the Union President's number on the pamphlets as well? It's both sides that can't agree, yet the Union makes the management look like the bad guys. The students and anyone else crossing the picket lines should be able to contact either the Union President or the College President to voice their concerns.

Thanks to the pickets for backing up the traffic all the way to Balmoral Street.. Try getting out of Tim Hortons, Hotel, or Montanas.. You have to wait for some nice person to let you go through and theres not a lot of happy people that early in the morning..

this is stupid..sat for 25 minutes while waiting for them to take they're leisurely time to talk to people.. I purposely left the house early as I thought I'd be held up for a few minutes... not 25.. when the time came they asked me to roll down my window.. I simply drove past and flipped them off.. get back to work you greedy bums.. be happy you have a job.

Perhaps if you rolled down your window and talked to them you would understand the issues (it's not about greed), but I'm sure being beligerant and ignorant of the matters at hand work much better for you!

If you had read the article, or actually rolled down your windows to talk to any of these people picketing, you would know it's not about money at all. In the province, graduates are having to jump through hoops just to get full time jobs (I should know, I graduated 2 years ago and I still had to go through part time/internships just to get full time). All across this province employers would rather pay 2 part time employees to do the work, rather than pay 1 person full time and give them benefits, it's insane.

"Management seems to be looking at a two-tiered system where new workers end up coming in with a lower wage and lesser benefits," Conlon said.

It says right there in the article, this isn't about the strikers getting more money, it's about protecting the people who will be coming in. I don't like this strike either, and I agree the lineups are frustrating to deal with. But if you guys end up in a union one day and have to go through this hassle, I'm sure you'd hope people would be more courteous when you are on the picket.

I went to college so I could get a good job and NOT end up in a union.

As one of the support staff members on strike at Confederation College I would like to address the ignorant comments and misinformed individuals that choose to speak before they think. I am like you,I am someone's neighbour, niece, daughter, friend, a graduate of Confederation College. Please keep this in mind when you hurl insults, call us lazy, run the line and almost cause harm to me, flip me the finger and outright disrespect me. I am on strike to support my union, when hired at the College the position I applied for fell under the Support Staff union and it is a position I have held for over 10 years. As a grad of this college I was happy to get a full-time permanent position with a great organization. It meant I could support myself to buy a house, travel and continue to live in Thunder Bay. Currently we are on strike because management at all of our ontario colleges is seeking to eliminate full time jobs with benefits , meaning the opportunity for YOU, your children to get good paying full-time jobs in this community will be eliminated. Forcing you or your children to work three part-time jobs or for you to relocate all together. Would you not stand up for this? Would you not want to say thats not right and fight for good jobs for our students , for Thunder Bay and for Ontario?
Next time you drive by, you dont need to agree with us, but please refrain from trying to cause harm, being rude to us or trying to run the line. All we ask is for the respect and your SUPPORT. We care about the students too, that is why we are taking a stand!!!!!!
