Ignace takes next step to become nuclear waste host community

The town of Ignace has decided to take the next step in the process to become a host community for a nuclear waste repository.

The town of Ignace has decided to take the next step in the process to become a host community for a nuclear waste repository.

Ignace town council has decided to move forward into Phase 3 of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's site selection process.

The NWMO will now perform feasibility studies to determine whether Ignace's geology meets the detailed requirements for the repository.

Ignace Mayor Lee Kennard said although they have not committed to the project yet, the studies will provide valuable information to the township and its residents.

The construction phase alone would create 800 temporary jobs in the area, as well as 400 permanent positions for more than a hundred years.

The feasibility studies are set to begin in 2012.

Ignace is one of six communities in the region that have expressed interest in the nuclear waste repository.

The others are Ear Falls, Nipigon, Schreiber, Hornepayne and Wawa.
