Party sanctions against Thunder Bay’s two NDP MPs are still in place, but both area Parliament members assure constituents that there’s still a lot of work for them to do.

John Rafferty (NDP, Thunder Bay-Rainy River) and Bruce Hyer (NDP, Thunder Bay-Superior North) were punished by the NDP’s interim leader Nycole Turmel in November after the local MPs voted with the government to end the long-gun registry.

The punishment means nether MP can speak or ask questions in the House. They can’t travel for business with the exception of moving between their riding and Ottawa. They were also stripped of their critic roles and kicked off committees.

Those sanctions were still in place when MPs returned to the House this week after a six-week hiatus.

Rafferty said it will stay that way until the long-gun bill passes third reading. When that happens is anyone’s guess, the MP said.

“I did hear a rumour that they are trying to get finished with the issue this month,” Rafferty said.
Hyer said third reading was originally supposed to come up this week, but was removed.

The timetable change leads Hyer to believe that the Conservatives won’t bring it up until after March so that they can use it to apply pressure to the NDP when it chooses its new leader.

Regardless, they both say the sanctions haven’t kept them from doing their jobs.

Rafferty said he continues to work toward improving rural broadband Internet. He’s also trying to get a one cent increase to the gas tax and change the formula so cities are funded not just by population, but also by geographical area.

The move would bring an extra $500 million to municipal infrastructure he said.

“There’s still lots and lots of work I can do not just in the riding but here in Ottawa,” Rafferty said.

Hyer added that from getting a fire truck for Whitesand First Nation to convincing the Conservatives to extend a federally-funded program for the defunct Terrace Bay Pulp, he’s had no shortage of work.

“While some of my rights have been taken away, my workload has not,” he said.

They are also still part of the House duty roster, which makes sure there are enough NDP MPs attending various meetings on Parliament.
Although it was the party that sanctioned the two MPs last year, Hyer said he’s still not sure who had the final decision.

“I’m not sure whether the current interim leader drew this up on her own, or whether she is having her strings pulled by somebody in the party,” he said.

Based on the MPs he’s spoken with, Hyer said a majority of the NDP caucus supports Rafferty and him.

Nice party you voted for Thunder Bay.

The lgr should be past the senate by March according to my sources.

the sooner the better, as a list of who own what doesnt do anything to make anyone safer.

All that said, the NDP continues to be a joke. Watching them make fools of themselves politically is to be expected when their parachute candidates are barely old enough to cross the street.

..but then again, NDP voters arent able to do that either.

People are entitled to there own opinions and political beliefs and making fun of someone for exercising there beliefs is as they say.

Childish, grow up. Act your age and not your shoe size.
2/2/2012 1:44:38 PM
Delbert Grady says:
Childish? Have you seen the children in her majestys loyal opposition?

Their arguements are laughably incorrect and reek of immaturity and inexperience.

I figured since Thunder Bay is such good little NDP voters, the only language they understand is garbled goo-goos and gaa-gaas.

Now go ask the government to refill your bottle and get a fresh diaper. Adults are speaking now.
2/2/2012 4:34:53 PM
panzerIV says:
Really Adults are talking? All the comments you've made on this website are nothing but attacks against a person's beliefs.

If this was an adult conversation we would be having a debate. You believe that its only the official opposition that's acting like children. Every party yells and screams, and interrupts when another is talking so don't go licking Harpers boots like hes a saint.

O yeah if your wonder, I'm not a lefty, or a socialist or a marxist. I'm a right of center person. Please again, act with some maturity and have a decent conversation. Your wasting my time.

Delbert Grady says:
Umm, hello???

All our comments are regarding our beliefs. A persons comments are either going to be agreed with or not. If one doesnt agree with someones comment they can just be quiet or they can enter their own comment, one that most likely goes against the other persons "beliefs".

So, my comments being contrary to others seems to fit well within the scope of all this, does it not?

If you want to have a debate, why dont you try discussing the issues within the story? SO far, youve made 2 comments that just attack my beliefs, while staying completely out of the "debate" on the issue in the story.

So, I dont know if its your apparent teenage attention span hindering your "debate" or just all around NDPness. (are they any different?)

SO, yes. The adults are trying to debate issues of the story, while you just keep wandering into the room and ask "whats daddy doing to mommy"? over and over again.

Youre just too young and naive to understand adults I guess.

You know, when dealing with a petulant child, what works best is to ignore that behaviour. Eventually the child realizes his or her behaviour no longer has the desired effect, and stops. The same thing would apply here.
Think i'm with you 100% panzer.
2/3/2012 5:30:51 AM
Delbert Grady says:
Funny you should mention that. Thats the exact tactic the NDP are using against Rafferty and Hyer.

I guess thats what you voted for?

And I see the NDPers were busy clicking agrees. I have to laugh because someone always accuses me of agreeing to my own comments, I assume trying to make me look bad, but in this case they both embarassed themselves!

Too much fail from these NDPers for one guy to laugh at!

Anyway, its funy watching all you people try to attack me, while neglecting the facts and issues of the story. Thats why you will always come in last in life and politics, because sooner or later reality pops up to steal the show.

Why dont you guys grow up some day and try discussing the storys on these pages instead of letting your little emotions get all amped up?

Your Cons have just been caught faking an Immigration swearing-in ceremony in order to satisfy the needs of a media outlet. Who is "childish, laughably incorrect " and reeking of "immaturity and inexperience"?

The hypocrisy of you and your ilk is really breathtaking. Never forget, 60% did not vote for the Con.
2/3/2012 2:26:28 PM
Delbert Grady says:
Oh, forgot to address your crybaby statement about 60% not voting for our majority government...

can you understand the simple reality that over 70% didnt vote for your NDP either?

We count votes in this country, not who comes in second place.

Federally the NDP was just the first loser. If youre proud of losing, wear the hat. Youre probably comfortable in it anyway.

Now can we discuss how the non-democratic party allows its members to vote freely?
2/3/2012 4:08:22 PM
ranger says:
You have assumed that I support the NDP, and you didn't respond to another Con mis-step and apparent lying and hypocrisy. Instead, you have engaged in another ad hominem attack. You fail to further your cause, and I'm not sure what your point actually is. My point is that the Conservatives have repeatedly proven their belief that what is good for the goose has nothing to do with the what is good for the gander. They, being Harper, has repeatedly broken laws that his own party passed. They posit themselves as morally correct, but they have repeatedly proven that they are morally bankrupt.
Again, what is your point? And please try to refrain from name calling for just one post.

Sorry . I happen to agree with Delbert Grady on this one. Watching the NDP make fools of themselves is nothing new. As a mature student and concerned citizen, I decided to make a trip to the Ruby Moon and listen to a Q&A with Paul Dewar. I was very disappointed. Questions dodged, anti-harper this, anti-harper that. Unrealistic solutions. Where the hell is all this money coming from that they wish to use? 1 penny on gas is not going to change anything. As for taking Delbert's words to heart, you have a right to be offended in CANADA! Only a fascist/nut would claim injustice and wish for the individual to be silenced. Though, kangaroo courts such as the Ontario Human Rights commission, (flocked with NDP supporters), wouldn't know free speech or basic human rights if it game up and slapped them in the face. Oh, and I do not have hold any loyalties to Harper, Rae, or anyone really, as i do not believe ANY of them represent true Canadian interests, but that of their twisted parties.

Be careful gentlemen. We may feel the same about you at the next election.

Can someone please explain to me....how this is a Democracy? When did the NDP hire Jong Il?
2/2/2012 3:04:42 PM
Delbert Grady says:
Theyve never been democratic. Theyve always been socialist/communists/marxists who came from the island of misfit toys.

Nobody ever took them seriously, well except for lefty thunder bay and welfare quebec who tried to cash in on Layton's snow job career politicing and fleecing the weak minded.

The NDP is the party of the lazy and uninspired who seek to take from those who earned their way, and give it to those too lazy to try and do it themselves. They dont want to work their way into a decent life so they try to vote their way in to one.

Little surprise Thunder Bay has become NDP voters after the liberals failed to deliver on their promises of endless handouts.

The NDP have idolized Layton just like the North Koreans idoled Kim Jong. Theyre just as misguided too.

Just watch the ndp in action, they continually embarass themselves, its just that nobody focused on them this much since they rose to stardom among the lazy.

Their MPs are a source of entertainment.

WOW! Grady sound just like the lunatic Pie Island (probably the same person). Clearly you do not realize the an MP is a very hard working person, not "lazy." And to say that the NDP has "never been democratic" again, lunacy. They have held governments over and over. Winning ELECTIONS!!!(that's part of democracy) And with the exception of one time in history have held balanced budgets each time. And WOW! Calling everyone how votes for the NDP "Welfare"? You know passing GOOD legislation to help people with things like health care and human rights, yes Tommy Douglas was the 1st in the world in SK to bring in Human Rights, is not "welfare", it is common sense. So Grady. Think before you type. Clearly you do not. I say this with your "welfare" in mind.

These two MPs should be commended for standing up for their voters and for their convictions. It is rare to find politicians that won't cave in when the pressure from their "leader" is on them.

I will vote for these guys no matter what party banner they run under. There is no point in punishing them for their party leader's undemocratic behavior, and I've never seen any local Lieberal or Harper reformaTory who would would have the same backbone.

So your telling us that your Canada's version of the Tea Party like Sarah Palin or Newt Gingrich.

How's giving tax breaks to millionaires? O yeah not helping the 99% that keep the economy running.

How's those corporate tax cuts working? Again, 500 jobs down the drain today, 1,000 the other day. All while governments are giving them a break.

How's gloating to the world about our financial institutions? Ruining the image of Canada as a welcoming country and the reason they have so much extra cash is because they charge excessively even in the face of record profits year after year. O look, scotiabank is raising rates again, yipie thanks harper.

How's that moon base coming along. Keep em coming your giving Obama a walk in the park for the next election.

trevor99 says:
You say you are fed up with the lies of the other parties so you support the NDP but you then say you do not vote. I am not sure what you do. You say lies. Governing, which the NDP have very little experience with is far different than being in opposition. What you want to do is different than what you can do. They say anything it seems.

The NDP promised us change and support for forestry. They have not delivered. Mr. Rafferty has pledged to fight for pensions but when his was peaked at he made public statements about why his is different than others.

The NDP made the raise for elected officials in Ontario a huge issue in the 2007 election but they all took the money and still do. Hypocracy or lying accusations are not limited to just some parties.

As for this issue why has no one ever asked our two NDP representatives how is it they can belong to a party that wants to keep something that we are so opposed to. It seems to be a contradiction that they do not have to justify.

then in my opinion you are more to blame than anyone. To not vote out of some sort of misguided cynicism is the worst reason of all. All parites, all politicians are truly bad???? Do you honestly believe that is an accurate statement. Then all lawyers must be crooked. All doctors must be incompetent. We sure know that all cops use excess force and all garage mechanics overcharge. These kinds of general statements due a large disservice to the majority of people who try their best.

Someone is going to win. So hold your nose and vote for the lesser of your evils. To not vote, is to me one of the worst things anyone can do. While people have the right not to vote, I would like to see a law that says if you do not vote this election, you cannot vote the next one and are removed from the voting list. Democracy cannot survive if indifference or neglect is the order of the day. So your concience is okay to get someone bad for the rest of us? Is that really your logic. You scare me.

You seem relatively articulate. Is it impossible to just state your opinion without implying that everyone else is an idiot. You don't like the NDP, I don't like the NDP but man oh man you have to lighten up on your postings.

As for the totals on your first two postings, 698 on one, 699 on another, quite the coincidence.

Then we have Panzer, 1287 agrees, that must be a new worlds record. I suppose somen people have a great deal of time on their hands.

The lousy part of this site, through no fault of its own, is that people can say things here that they could never say in person. It makes people brave. Too bad it lowers the discussion from debate to a grade 2 level.

The only thing missing is "oh yeah".
