There appears to be some positive news on the local jobs front.

While the national jobless rate went up last month, from 7.5-to-7.6 percent, it was a different picture here in the Thunder Bay area.

According to numbers from Statistics Canada, The jobless rate in this city for January was pegged at 6.2 per cent. That’s down from the seven per cent mark recorded in December.

you can make the argument that if one person is out of job, it is too many. It used to be that a 4% unemployment rate was considered full employment. I do not know if that is still the case, but given what has gone on around the world, that is not a bad average. Let's hope it continues.

Guaranteed someone tries to make this into a negative by saying something stupid like "its cuz people are moving". Jobless rates are down, housing starts are up. Vacancy rates are among the lowest they've ever been. Yet somehow this will become a story about how Thunder Bay is dying.

now if we could just get the jobs back at Global Sticks that would be great...considering we already payed for them.

And who exactly is hiring? I would bet it has something to do with social , drug abuse services and consultants hired by the city .

Could it be the number of mining exploration companies moving into the city? Or the new businesses setting up shop in the Waterfront District? Perhaps it's one of the construction companies working on many projects throughout the city. Fisher Wavy is expanding into the city, bringing even more jobs with it. A little bit of research goes a long way! There are a lot more developments coming over the next several years...this is a good news story, and it will continue!

TBDR, there will always be negative comments made on positive news. I however feel this is good news!

It's interesting to note that only 2,300 jobs were created in Canada during the month of January.

Some will believe anything that they read...or what the government states...I would think people would be somewhat wiser these days...yet there are the regulars that agree with the figures reported...I for one do not believe them to be accurate what so ever.!

I called the YES Employment Agency today to see what their numbers indicate...well they have 23,0000 people enrolled-or listed with their agency, then add the 5,000 plus as I was told today who are receiving ODSP funding, then add the 2,500 plus who are receiving Ontario Works payments as I was told today and then tell me again how accurate these Stats Can figures really are.

I can only imagine the mayor and city council jumping all over these stats to bolster their popularity...well at least I believe HOBBS will for sure.!!

Well I can believe him, or I can believe a guy who has zero credibility and clear personal bias. I'll take my chances with the mayor

Canadian business's who are still profitable are unwilling to hire any more people until they see what the outcome's in Europe and the USA will unfold...plus right here in Thunder Bay alone we have 2,500 plus on Ontario Works, over 5,000 on ODSP and the YES Employment Agency alone has approx. 23,0000 individuals registered with them...now add those numbers up and we are talking about over 30,000 let alone the numbers who have left town to work and those who are not on any of the 3 lists I have mentioned.!!
