Optimistic

Michael Gravelle says he’s optimistic a buyer for Terrace Bay Pulp will be found.

Gravelle, the Minister of Natural Resources and the MPP for Thunder Bay – Superior North, said he's disappointed the troubled mill entered CCAA creditor protection Jan. 25. The province is listed as the mill’s largest creditor, owed more than $24 million.

But he’s expecting a lot of interest in the mill, although he couldn’t say who those potential buyers might be.

“Obviously that is being done on a very confidential basis and it has to remain that way. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to be getting into any more details,” he said Friday afternoon during an interview with Dougall Media reporters.

Getting 350 people back to work under new ownership at the mill is the province’s top priority, Gravelle said.

That scenario would not only be good for Terrace Bay, but for Ontario’s taxpayers.

When Ontario gave the company the money more than a year ago, Gravelle said it wasn’t so much a loan as it was recognition that Terrace Bay Pulp was and is a valuable asset as the only operating pulp mill between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

For that reason, he's confident there will be a number of serious buyers.

An eight-page list of creditors was posted by the CCAA monitor Ernst and Young earlier this week. On top of the money owed to the province, another $41.4 million dollars Canadian is owed to companies right across the country.

The overwhelming majority of the money owed by Terrace Bay Pulp is to businesses in Thunder Bay and along the north shore.

A number of operations in the city are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The pulp mill also owes another U.S.$1.5-million to companies based in the United States.

Not included on the list is the Municipality of Terrace Bay, which is owed more than $500,000 in back taxes.

Another stellar Liberal investment that pissed away our tax dollars.

They may have thought they created jobs but all they did was cost 8 pages of creditors even more of their money.

Gravelle should fall on his proverbial sword just out of respect for Ontarians. Its the least he could do.

Government should not be putting tax payers money into private business no matter what the size of the company. This is just asking for trouble. GOVERNMENT CAN'T CREATE JOBS!!! As Ronald Reagan said "GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM".

Just look @ the mess the "idiot" is making down south. Giving over "half a billion" dollars to "Solyndra" just to see it vanish. But what can you expect from a "Marxist" who has never even had a "real job". That man is too stupid to run a "lemonade stand". But hey, its only tax payers money right?

I commend you for expressing your opinion but I would also you leave the 'marxist' part out. Opinions are great when put to good use but putting down someones opinion just doesn't do anyone any good.

Just a FYI that "Idiot" must be doing something right because his country has created over 500,000 jobs the last two months while both the house and the senate(?) have done nothing for months for the American/world's people. You seriously cannot blame the whole mess on Obama, it was all parties collectively adding to the debt pretending the fake money would never stop and that businesses would police themselves. The mess we have now is due to lack of regulation and trying to "get every American into a home" as G.W. Bush said. Apperently, it didn't matter if they could pay the bills.

Enjoy the chat, looking forward to a response. Have a good day, enjoy the weekend.

"real job" ?? .... To whom are you referring ? Sounds like an apt description of YOUR illustrious ( definitely non-marxist ) P.M. Stephen J Harper. What is Harpers claim to fame in the working world ... ahhh yes ... as a copy boy for daddys beloved Imperial Oil. How many taxpayers dollars has this "idiot" ( your words ) psssed away in corporate handouts and tax reductions ?

A pox on all their houses !!!

You know i like mike as a person, but come on - he's optimistic when the industry was in trouble, than he's optomistic when a mill shuts down, than he's thrilled when the same mill fires back up, than he's optomistic when the same mill goes down again.

Nothing about the Buchanan Forest Products, maybe Long Lake division, bankruptcy yet??? Unsecured creditor letters are on there way to employees losing severance, and others involved. May be because Longlac/Nakina were used as collateral for the $25Mill loan??

This is just denial. The pulp and paper industry has, and still is, restructuring itself globally. Terrace Bay is an old mill with high costs in a region dominated by forests that grow slowly and are expensive to harvest. It simply can't compete with fast-growing eucalyptus farm/mill complexes in South America, and new mills built with new technology and facing much lower costs in developing nations.

The Canadian industry proppsed itself up artificially with a weak Canadian dollar for years, making money off the exchange rate and not investing in new technologies, energy supplies or value-added products. That particular bird has now come home to roost. Terribly sad to say. The WORST thing the province could do now is pump more money into this mill in order to attract a new buyer, because we'll see this exact same story in another 2-3 years.

I just looked through the list of creditors and it's terrible to see so many small businesses both in Thunder Bay and the rest of the area are loosing so much.

Let's hope this can be saved. Sadly though, it will probably be sold off, dismantled and shipped to China as scrap leaving yet another fine NWO landmark industry gone.

How many times have we heard this song before?

Bucky's companies go belly up like clockwork, and taxpayers are left holding the bag. Not to mention hundreds of ruined businesses and livelihoods across the region.

We should get our money back, including $50 million in stumpage fees still owed to the province. Why do taxpayers keep throwing our money to him?

I will never, ever vote for any politician who will give Bucky taxpayer money ever again. I don't care how many "jobs" its supposed to create (Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me a dozen times...)

By calling the IDIOT a Marxist i was being kind. Please take the time to educate yourself before responding. Pick up a dictionary & read. Also take the wax out of your ears & "really listen" to his speeches. The only thing that stops me from calling him a FASCIST is the fact he "has to work with the senate & the house".

FYI the "mess" is due to SOCIALIST IDEOLOGY in the Democratic Party just like it is in the NDP & Liberal Party. It began decades ago, the IDIOT is just the current office holder.

Not sure who you think I was addressing my previous post to but this is deffinately for you. BTW, I couldn't help notice your use of the word "collectively," but based on your post I suppose it shouldn't be surprising.

Corporate handouts? Due to the "auto pact" between Canada & the USA, Harpers hand was forced. He was opposed to the "auto bailout" but because of the pleading by the IDIOT, due to the Democrats being in bed with the UNIONS the government had to go along with it.

BTW, have you ever gotten a "thank-you" from the UNIONS for saving their ---? No, me neither, but then again I wasn't expecting one. They're "too stupid" to realize they were a BIG part of the reason why GM & Chrysler were going under. And they complain about corporate greed, its laughable.

hockeyday said basically what I was going to say, that Mike is always optimistic. Lousy time for the town, the workers, and gov't. I know it is easy to dump on the gov't, but someone, anyone please tell all of us what the magical answer is. Joe Commuzzi on the old Rick Smith show said that small business owners in T.Bay were complaining to him about this gov't giving pulp and paper too much support. If the gov't does nothing, they will be criticized. If they do something and it fails, they will be criticized. If they do something and it succeeds they had nothing to do with it, -see Bombardier. As anmiki said, the pulp industry in our region and country was based on a weak dollar. No one invested up here. Should we let the industry die, should we try to save some, or pour more money to try and save a lot. Lots of critics with few answers. If let it die is the answer, can you promise to stop blaming gov't for an industry that is long past its prime in this region.
2/4/2012 4:06:00 PM
PC says:
so the government supported it and it still died. Just a longer time to die.
Maybe the government should have focused on the mining and other industries and NWOntario would have had a viable industry base.
From talk around town when the plant opened again not all the repairs were completed and that is being talked about when the one piece blew up, and the plant had to close.
Maybe if the government and the company paid attention to concerns of the workers these accidents and closures wouldn't happen. It might help save tax payers money as well.
But basically government stay out of the private sector business. You are to run the province not finance companies and run the province into debt.
2/5/2012 12:49:53 PM
lori says:
PC you suggest this would not have happened if the gov't had intervened more but end it with telling the gov't to stay out of the private sector.

See, I am okay with that belief system as long as you are consistent. Should they have stayed out of the auto industry that was saved.

Should they have stayed away from mass transit vehicles like Mike Harris did and the 800 jobs at Bombardier.

You see, as long as you take a position that is consistent, fine, but you don't. You want the gov't more jobs in your area and you blame them when they don't.

So how do these jobs in one industry towns for products that are hard to sell supposed to happen if the gov't doesn't try to support them.

Look at your second line, then your second last.

"should have focused on mining and other industries"... vs, stay out of the private sector business.

It is unfortunate that you cannot see that you are speaking from both sides of an issue in your quest to blame this gov't for everything.

The Beaver..... says:
welcome back Lori..yes i do blame Government for its near sightedness and not seeing that this is a Industry that is long past it's time as you say..Evedently you seen that..they did not..
2/5/2012 8:51:38 AM
lori says:
Beaver,

I am not defending everything the gov't did in forestry, never will. As for our two local guys, what should they have done. Not fought for support and said "hey the industry is dead" while everyone else is screaming for them to do something, anything.

Did the Chamber say, let the industry die. Did the workers, their families, anyone. No, only the experts here.

What always bothered me is that this gov't took blame for the job losses in an industry the same critics say was long dead. I guess I must be slow in not getting that conflicting position.

So if I understand people like you, from this point forward, you will not criticize the gov't one bit for not supporting forestry, not once.

Well, then you are the only one. As I said. PC wants more jobs in her isolated northern region, says the gov't is not doing enough and critizes the gov't for giving money to the mill.

Someone please provide the answers. So far we just get monday morning quarterbacks.
2/6/2012 8:36:49 PM
yqtyqt says:
Let's put it this way. The gov't should adopt a policy of "do not resuscitate" or DNR to an industry or town that is already dead. Throwing money at these places(Bucky comes to mind) is like trying to give mouth to mouth with a person who's been dead for years. It makes now sense.

What makes even less sense is spending taxpayers money which doesn't exist. Would any taxpayer spend money when they are so deep in the hole $1/4trillion, that their grandchildren will have to pay their way out.

Apparently Dalton,Billie and Mike think this is a good idea. But then again, votes are worth spending future taxpayers money on.

As for the companies that are in limbo (not dead already), give them support only to the extent that long term jobs and future tax revenues are guaranteed and get collateral for the tax money spent. A bit at a time, until they prove themselves or go under.

And the same liberal "experts" have to stop asking the same stupid questions over& over & over& over again
