Four children inside a Wiley Street home were able to make it out safely after a fire severely damaged one of the bedrooms.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue arrived at the home sometime after 11 a.m. Sunday to find one of the upper bedrooms engulfed in smoke. Firefighters were able bring the fire under control within a short period.

District Chief Dave Grant said it was large sized fire and caused a significant amount of damage to the children’s bedroom. He said the fire was contained to that one bedroom.

“There were four children involved but they escaped with the help of neighbours and their parents,” Grand said. “Both the children and the parents are OK. It’s absolutely important to have a fire safety plan and have smoke detectors. One was in this home and alerted them to the problem.”

He added the cause of the fire still isn’t known at this time.
