Police, MTO conduct safety blitz

By tbnewswatch.com

Police cruisers were patrolling the streets of Thunder Bay Wednesday, looking for older vehicles that may cause harm to surrounding motorists.

Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service, alongside OPP officers and officials with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation were checking for unsafe commercial vehicles, and “old beaters," as part of their safety lane check initiative.

City police traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter said in just one day, at least a dozen vehicles have been stripped of their plates.

After the recent snowfall, several sander and plow trucks were nabbed with being over the weight limit restrictions.

Porter said one individual was also arrested on a drug warrant, which is common during blitzes.

Porter added that the random check is done to keep city roads safe.

Porter said Thunder Bay Police and the OPP hold five safety lane checks every year.

Well, I feel so much safer!

Those overweight and rusty vehicles were quite threatening.

I understand the law is the law, but after reading so much about whats wrong in this city, with REAL safety concerns, I cant help but feel this is an extreme misappropriation of resources.

Unbelievable ! The city is infested with Oxy Zombies ,robberies and assaults and the Police in their infinite wisdom are doing spot checks on old clunkers . Was this an outing for the throngs of desk bound officers and did they have a picnic after ?

Yes but none are driving overloaded unsafe vehicles in their Zombie Oxy State.

Traffic laws are part of the many laws the police (city and OPP and MTO) are sworn to enforce...not just the ones you loud mouth know-it-alls deem important. I'm far more concerned about some piece of junk truck on the road than a junkie anyday.

I demand the police patrol so I can walk around at night flashing my cash. Then when someone is hurt by an unsafe vehicle I will cry foul that the police aren't doing their job.

the law is the law, profits from charges=more gov't revenue=less taxes i might have to pay one day, OR a bigger HST credit

You think having those levels of government controlling the whole process dont eat up any and all revenues from fines?

Sorry, but youre paying all those salaries. Less taxes? HAH!

Maybe they should just make annual safety checks a requirement for ALL vehicles instead of just commercial trucks! Then, you whiners could find something else to complain about!
I'm glad the MTO is doing this in an effort to make our roads safer!

There it is again! Yup, its the "SAFETY" cry.

More government just adds to the problems society faces, it certainly doesnt help.

Whats wrong with all you little government loyalists? Why is your answer to everything more and bigger government?

I swear too many Canadians have never grown up and they want government to do everything for them. What a disgrace.

First of all I never said that the police should not patrol or investigate robberies or crimes committed by junkies. I said that I fear unsafe vehicles far more than a junkie and as such do not think that the police should lessen the enforcement of our traffic laws just because there are a few Macs robberies and/or junkies out there .... both of which do not and have not affected me ever. As one who drives daily ... unfit vehicles do affect me, again daily.
We should not ever ask the police to pick and chose what laws to enforce when they are sworn to enforce ALL of them.
Finally, would you be less upset if your mother didn't get punched in the face but injured in a collision resulting from an unsafe vehicle. Would you want your mother to operate an unsafe vehicle?
I don't need to "smarten up"as you say , I look at society in its totality. Perhaps you should too when you ask the police to look the other way because it doesn't jive with your views.

The MTO does this blitz at least twice a year sometimes more. I think the city police have a traffic dept so those officers are always assigned to traffic duties. No waste of resources unless you think we don't need a traffic dept. But then who would deal with all the wonderful drivers in this city when they smash their cars, run red lights, and talk on their cell phones when driving.
