Police say a motorist running a red light is the likely cause of a two-vehicle crash Wednesday that closed the southern side of the John and Court street intersection.

Const. Gordon Snyder said the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

“It was a collision involving a passenger van and a car. At this time there does not appear to be any serious injuries as a result of the collision and it appears one of the vehicles had gone through a red light.”

One of the vehicles, a blue Pontiac Montana, proceeded through the intersection and crashed through a traffic standard, the force of the collision ripping the sign from its moorings and through the security fence of an adjacent business.

It was a cause of concern for emergency crews on scene.

“The light still has power, so there are still live wires, so city crews are currently working to make sure that it’s safe,” said Snyder, saying he hoped to see the intersection reopened fully before the supper hour ends.

At least one person was taken to hospital for precautionary measures.

Typical cause as per most Thunder Bay drivers. Mid powered vehicle driven by low powered brain.

I drive through this intersection regularly and on several occassions have had close calls with several vehicles going through red lights and/or turning in front of me! It was only a matter of time before it became news!

I see Thunder Bay drivers run red lights every day. It's almost like they were taught to drive like that!
Maybe it's time to install cameras?

Photo radar!!
Works in other cities. Doesn't take coffee or lunch breaks, no vacation or health benefits, no pension plan.
Whew. Just about forgot to add.....pull over to do your cell phone tasks numb nuts and you won't get into accidents.
I was sitting in my house yesterday, 4 cars at different times stopped in front, cell phones came out, call not complete, feces for brains continues to drive with phone pressed to empty head.

This really doesn't surprise me in the least. I kind of expect to see 5-10x more of these accidents.

Every day on my 10-15 minute drive to work, I witness at least 3 people driving through red lights. That's just in 15 minutes at a handful of intersections. Every day, at least 2-3 cars drive through red lights at the corner of Golf Links/Edward and the Harbour Expressway. Not to mention seeing an empty school bus drive through a blatant yellow light that turns red as the vehicle comes to the intersection; not even trying to stop.

People are in a hurry to go nowhere. Speeding in this city doesn't help at all. Maybe in a bigger city like Toronto where you have to drive for 45 minutes. But going 10-20KM over the limit in a city where it only takes you 10 minutes to get to wherever you are going is useless.

There was an accident just a block away on Central Ave. Dude got T-boned trying to turn onto Central. I would imagine they were trying to beat the traffic.

I had just the opposite yesterday. Waiting to turn left at the green light, some old fellow approached from the opposite side and stopped on a green.....just sat there! Like heck I was turning, he didn't have a clue what was going on! I eventually turned when the light changed red. Bizzaro world!
