Vandals continue to strike the children’s garden at Prince Arthur’s Landing.

City officials on Tuesday said three times over the past month the stone sculptures, shaped like balloon animals, have been targeted, with large pieces now broken off three of the 10 sculptures.

“The intent of this installation was to have something inviting and interactive that would appeal to children’s imaginations,” said Leah Bayly, Supervisor of Cultural Services & Events, in a release issued by the city.

“Feedback from children in City summer programs influenced the selection of the artwork, and the animals have been extremely popular with all ages.  It is extremely disheartening to see them thoughtlessly damaged in this way.”

The sculptures are collectively worth $95,000.

The city is working with artists Paul Slipper and Nadine Stefan of Vancouver to repair the damage, estimated at about $5,000.

“How sad that people have to vandalize a children’s garden.  It would have taken serious force to break them,” Stefan said.

Police have been notified and monitoring in the area will be stepped up. Anyone with information on the acts of vandalism should contact Crime Stoppers at 623-8477.

Very sad indeed. What kind of thrill would anyone get out of damaging these is beyond me. Whenever this kind of vandalism happens it is essentially a slap in the face to all taxpayers.

Sad as it is, we have to keep watch on the stupidity of others. They should have been made of metal something more destroy proof. Still amazes me that the Boulevard Lake figurines are still standing.....

And how many people SAID, ages ago, that this exact thing was going to happen? Our tax dollars paid for expensive artwork, that the majority didn't want, by artists not from Thunder Bay in the first place, while we live in a city that has become crime ridden.

This was a predicted situation, by anyone with any common sense.

Well, they look stupid to begin with, so damaged or not, they still have the same effect on me.

lol...you are certifiable.
They don't care what you think Delbert, they were for the children's garden, not the geriatric centre. I think they were kind of cute.

Just imagine how much this granite balloon art costs the taxpayers then you will realize the true crime.

Ahahahahahahaha!

Just because you PAID $95,000 for them, does not make them WORTH $95,000!!!

Years ago I ended up having a security job watching over a cemetary at night. Why? Because morons were breaking headstones. If you want to put art up for anybody in this city it is going to get damaged. Why, because there is no respect and people just don't care. If they did, they would still be in tact.

Why is it some morons can't stand to see anything nice? Lemme guess,if they catch any of the vandals, they'll be classified as young offending baboons..

A slap in the face to taxpayers is right, especially to the ones who were against all this wasted money on wasted balloon art, it was all put up just to be vandalized, what did anyone expect????

unknowncronic says:

More than likely kids that did it, but What do you expect when the the youth have no way of ever getting into trouble with the "YOUTH ACT" protecting them REGARDLESS of what they do?

Even if they were caught, nothing would come of it anyways & they would have a clean record @ 18 regardless.

OMG! Children’s imaginations don't need $95,000 (overpriced) artwork. They are kids, lol...and it's called imagination for a reason. Try making something they can actually use. For a hundred grand they should get more fun than a few sculptures.
It's a joke the way Thunder Bay uses our money.

The first crime occurred when the taxpayers were forced to pay for these. And c'mon, it was obvious these were going to be destroyed a long time ago, just by the way they were constructed.

why can't these vandals find something more constructive to do, like hacksaw down those embarassing million dollar beacons.

Well so much for adding public art in the city...especially at such high costs...maybe a time to re-think the entire process...no matter where you place it there is always a chance that someone will damage it in one form or another...just because they have no conscience and get a kick out of damaging things.!!

Our Police force unfortunately are too busy with big crimes and will not deal with these types of issues... They are more concerned about the drug dealers and are forgetting that there are other issues as well... some of them are too busy doing nothing but driving around... the other day there was a motorist driving like a maniac, and a cop went by him without even turning on his lights and fining him... i guess they have too much stuff on the go, or they just don't care.

I’m seriously waiting for someone to destroy the Million Dollar bent lamp posts that during the day look like bent vent pipes! I’ve been told they look nice at night but what kind of people are hanging out in the marina after dark? Need I say more??

Get a cement truck, backer in to the skatepark, filler in, no more reason for these kids to come and destroy the marina.

I guess the city could always string a rope from "bent pole to bent pole" and start a laundry drying service?

Why not, they do golf courses!!

There are cameras in that area, do you know what kind of image gets depicted, it will be a youth, about five to six feet, caucasion or aboriginal, in or around 15-20, does this not describe every person and every incident that has happened, I get they want nice things, but balloon art??? 95, 000 dollars???? Why can't thunder bay people citizens, tax payers, art payers decide on what we want for art,

I was so disappointed the last few nights. I have taken my friend from London out on the town and was telling her about the new Marina. So she said lets go down and take a look. As we were approaching the Marina, I told her about those $900,000 Beacons... well how embarrassed was I when the Beacons were not even turned on. We drove by and you could not even see them.. Why would they not be on after dark? Apparently they flash morse code! Then I mention that vandals damaged the art her response was, well this is down town Port Arthur, what would you expect, its so dumpy down town, I never come down here while in town! So, this comes from a out of town tourist.. I mentioned the Event Centre and her reponse was down here, who the hell thinks up crazy ideas like this, down town Thunder Bay is nothing compared to down town London, it will never work... Thank you my friend, its what many residents of this city are saying too!

Build it down town and watch the crime soar some more!!

A lot of teenagers right at the skate park though.

I don't know what's more saddening, the vandalism on these cute sculptures or the ridiculous comments on this story.

You know what's wrong with this city? it's not use of tax-payers money; it's the negativity from the city's citizens on just about any public initiative; it's the uninformed opinions on just about any public decision.

As someone who works in and walks around Port Arthur everyday, I'm encouraged by the developments I see: the expansion of the marina (the large increase in visitors and traffic down there is wonderful!), the new restaurants that are being built in the Red River Road area, etc.

I hope these vandals are ashamed of themselves, as should anyone condoning these actions.
