Tragedy has struck on the Victoria Day weekend.

Thunder Bay Police say a collision that forced the closure of Northern Avenue for more than 15 hours is now a fatality. A 67-year-old man is dead after the crash, after allegedly being struck by a truck driven by a 20-year-old male just before 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

The driver of the truck, identified as Shawn Lawrence Kolody, was taken into custody and charged with criminal negligence causing death and possession of stolen property over $5,000. Kolody remains in custody on Monday.

The accused was the subject of a police investigation by the Thunder Bay Police Service at the time of this incident.  As a result, the province’s Special Investigations Unit has evoked its mandate and is investigating this incident, police stated in a release issued early Monday afternoon.

The name of the deceased will be released once next of kin has been notified.

Police are directing all media inquiries to the special investigation unit.
