Whalen building repairs likely $250,000: City

Are you tired of car repairs? With our 10 Year, 160,000km Powertrain Warranty you wont be dishing out any of your hard earned money on costly vehicle repairs.www.thunderbaymitsubishi.ca

The city estimates it will cost $250,000 to repair the lightning-damaged Whalen Building.

City officials on Thursday announced they’ve completed a damage assessment review of the century-old building, which was hit by a lightning strike on May 23, sending cascades of rubble onto the St. Paul Street pavement below.

A portion, which the city did not specify in a release, will be paid for through insurance, with the rest being drawn through existing approved capital expenditures.

“It’s the first time a city-owned building has ever been struck, and thankfully no one was injured,” said Michael Smith, general manager of facilities and fleet. “We expect to start the repairs in the next month or so.”

Give it a rest. Moneys gone, can't get it back. The artist is enjoying the cash, blonde on one arm, brunette on the other, burning up the town. Something new will come along and you can complain and blame about it until the cows come home.

They should have put the bent poles on the top of this building. Two birds, one stone...

These bent pole jokes are getting very annoying. Whether you agree with them or not (and I think they were a waste), the money has been spent. We cannot recover it. We should hold our City accountable, but overuse of jokes is not doing that.

It is said lightning strikes destroy more property than matches, sparks, and kerosene combined. This building had a lighting rod on it didn't it? I am sure it makes a big difference in how much an insurance company will cover you as well. I am curious to get some feedback on this as I could live off 250,000 dollars for the rest of my life...

Wow! You're either extremely aged or incredibly frugal. Or both.

I spill more than $250k...

My guess is more like narcissistic personality disorder.

I too would be set for life. But then for other people, it's more like "This Hummer looks good on me."

Human relationship's aren't based on what you got, but more like how you got there. Stepping on other people's backs to gain monetarily isn't something to be proud of. Nor is flagrant waste of resources available to you. re narcissism

Frugal people are ALWAYS nicer. The division of people by class is rampant and excellerating. Nothing to be proud of as a society.

Oh well, God will judge us all in the end. Just smile and wave. Of course you have that right to think to yourself 'What an idiot!'

Sorry but unless you are retired or very close to it, no on could live off of $250 000 for the rest of their life.

You view of current economic realities is skewed to say the least.

Spending a very paltry $20 000 a year would get you 12 years of living.

The interest off of that $250 000 would be less than $7500 the first year and decline from there out as you dip into the principle.

The numbers don't add up. Frugal is putting it lightly.

DazeofThunder says:
@Arch...simple math....divide by minimum wage earning in a year....how many years do you get? Then subtract that from the average age of a Canadian male...et voila...you have a number. If one is to happily live off minimum wage frugality is a must.

$10.25 x 40 (hours a week) x 52 (weeks a year) = $21,320. Thus, $250,000 would let you live 11.7 years. That is if there is a 0.00% inflation.

Bent poles......still funny but still leaves many wondering why?

It only leaves me wondering why people on this site haven't gotten over it already and moved on.
There are people who like them and there are people who visit the marina. HOWEVER, some brilliant comedic artists still find a way to incorporate a lame "bent pole" joke or comment into virtuously ever news article.
"Bent pole this"...hahaha hoo ...see, NOT funny.

So, in true Thunder Bay fashion, the estimate is $250k, them we can expect the final bill to be about $500k.

Apparently they are bringing Michael Angleo back from the dead to carve the replacement parts based on that estimate Unreal

Ty advocate...now add in the frugality part. I can stretch those 11.7 years quite a bit further. It really is easy to live on minimum wage if you don't have many wants. But I digress....that sure is an expensive repair yes?

"Paid for through insurance" BS What a load of crap by another stuffed shirt smoke and mirrors city flim-flam man. The city self insures up to a million dollars so don't try and make this sound like we won't be paying for the repair. I am so sick and tired of them lying to us to make us feel better.

the estimated cost to repair the turret by 'sculpt-by-numbers' is $250k. Is the rest of the building okay? Many who worked in the building said the building shook. Are there other invisible, yet deadly faults that need to be remedied?
