Staying independent

Bruce Hyer will remain seated as an independent for at least a year.

First elected to the Thunder Bay-Superior North riding in 2008, the MP quit the NDP on April 23, causing turmoil inside and outside the party.  While Hyer said those who voted him into office in the 2011 federal election because of his party are upset by his decision, he believes the majority of his constituents still support him.

Business on Parliament Hill is going quite well, he added.

“I get a question a week, a statement almost every week. I get a lot more speaking time,” said Hyer. “I think it’s working very well. The litmus test for me is can I represent my constituents better or not better and I think it’s truly better.”

Hyer cited a dysfunctional parliament that put party politics over democracy as the top reason for leaving the NDP two months ago.

While he still philosophically agrees with his former party most of the time, he said it’s a relief to look at each piece of legislation or amendment and assess how he feels about, and how he believes his constituents feel about it, without any party pressures.

And while he said he’s been wooed by other parties to join their ranks, he will remain an independent MP for at least a year.

“Being an independent I think is working well for me and the constituents,” he said. “For now, I’m going to stay right where I am.”

Lakehead University political science professor Laure Paquette said Hyer should be worried about being an independent by the time the next federal election comes along.

“Without the party affiliation, very few independents get elected,” she said, adding that even NDP seats are never safe.

According to statements Hyer has made to the media and on social media outlets, Paquette said she wonders if he really understands how parties function in Canadian Parliament.

“That is to say party discipline is essential,” she said. “He seems to me to have been burning some bridges because of this lack of understanding or maybe he does understand and he doesn’t care.”

No wonder things don't get done unless your MP is the head man or his right hand.

“I get a question a week, a statement almost every week. I get a lot more speaking time,” said Hyer.

Are you kidding? The people we sent to Ottawa to represent us and our values and they 'might'
get to say something once every week. Man, no wonder people are voting less and less.

I personally thought Hyer was in it for the politics. I never believed much when I saw him speak in class. HOWEVER, the decision to step back from this beyond illogical / radical left wing HYPOCRITICAL party is in my own opinion, admirable. Run for PM Hyer, i'd vote for you. Someone who actually puts their people before their party.

Laure Paquette doesn't understand that democracy is rule by the people, not the party.

Go Bruce!

Really, who cares that you get a question or a statement a week. How is that being effective? You are totally irrelevent and a waste of a seat in the House of Commons, in my opinion.
"Being an independent I think is working well for me and the constituents" is a stupid statement indeed. It may be working well for you sir, but you should not speak for your constituents on this matter. This particular constituent thinks you are a waste of space and are operating under false pretenses; you are in it to get what you can (a fat pension) and not for your so called constituents.

Having been a Hyer supporter, I still firmly believe that Mr. Hyer's decision to leave the NDP was nothing more than a negative reaction spurred on by the promotion of Mr. Rafferty within the party ranks. I do not care how Mr. Hyer tries to justify his decision, combined with his continual attempts to promote himself as a martyr for the constituents of TBSN, not all of us have been taken in by this act. Call it what it was - a temper tantrum!!

I would argue that he has a right to be irritated. The party is joke. They punished both Rafferty and Hyer for voting in favour of abolishing the long gun registry. Where have you been for the past year? Rafferty also supported Mulcair as party leader .... Hyer didn't. Unlike the rest of the NDP, Hyer is not a dog which follows every single jerk command like a dog. You know what's funny about your criticism? You enable/back the behaviour of the NDP party! The very same behaviour which , ironically enough, is brought up time and time again in the house BY THE NDP! Why? The very same totalitarian nutjob radical left wing party doing the very same thing they accuse the conservatives of doing. Hypocrisy at its finest. Have a nice day.
