Resurfacing work continues on Highway 17, near Terrace Bay

Brake Repairs! Front Ends! Mufflers! Shocks! Not just mufflers - MINUTE MUFFLER, 677 Memorial Avenue. Open Monday-Saturday. Email: tminutemuffler@shaw.caClick here for details.

Last year, more than 28 kilometres of Highway 17 east of Terrace Bay was resurfaced, and now that work is continuing.

Construction work to re-pave more than 16 kilometres of Highway 17 West of Terrace Bay to Schreiber began this week.

The work has created about 40 jobs in the area and is meant to improve the pavement condition and reduce maintenance requirements as part of the McGuinty government's Growth Plan for Northern Ontario.

Pioneer Construction was awarded the $4.2-million project, and completion is set for later this year.

Northern says:
What jobs are they talking about? The companies working on the highway aren't from around here. All of the people working are from where these companies come from...not the local area and I highly doubt that there was anyone new hired for this job. On the other hand, they are doing an awesome job. Moving along at a high rate without any major traffic stops!

I'm sure they sub-contract jobs out to local companies. Pioneer is from Sudbury so I'm sure they aren't shipping the gravel and what not up to Terrace Bay.

Contractors can sub-contract up to 60 percent of the work, and since it makes economic sense for them, they tend to sub-contract as much as they possibly can to local labour, equipment and materials -- hence the jobs. If you were an out-of-town contractor, would you reduce your profits by paying living expenses to bring in staff and costs to bring in equipment, trucks, etc.? Think about it.

Mirris says:
We don't have to "Think about it". We see the local hotels filled up with out of town workers. I am sure there are spin-off benefits for our community; but these are small towns, and we know that most, if not all, the workers are not from around here.

Pioneer has a Thunder Bay operation on Oliver Road and they are doing the Terrace Bay job with all local employees.

There has also been a ton of work south to the border for the third year in a row.

That drive is becoming great as they are almost finished. Nice wide shoulders finally. Not sure how much work is being done west.
