The Thunder Bay Police Service is looking to hire a courthouse project co-ordinator to help with the transition into the new courthouse in 2014.

The city’s police board passed a resolution Tuesday giving the police the option of fulfilling that position with a sergeant.  Deputy chief Andy Hay said the courthouse co-ordinator would be responsible for developing processes and plans to transition to the new courthouse.

The position would be effective from now until March 2014, where it would then be reassessed.

“There are a lot of challenges when you transition to a new facility. The transition is not going to be open one day, closed the next as far as facilities,” he said.

“It’s going to be a migration to the new courthouse. It’s going to take a lot of co-ordination to make sure it’s cost effective and does work,” Hay added.

The position would cost $50,000 per annum and is not included in this year’s police budget.

Hay said their budget is large and their operations include costs beyond wages and benefits and it is in those areas they will look for potential cost-savings.

The construction of the courthouse in the south core is expected to be complete by September 2013 and it is expected to be operational by January 2014.

You clearly have no clue the amount of work that is going into this transition.

It's not as simple as putting a new lock on the car port.

It seems we have a huge police force and perhaps one of those staff members already being paid by Thunder Bay could take on this task. Does Thunder Bay really have to pay another 50K to coordinate this move. I have been involved in 2 large organizational moves with different employers through my years and neither time did either employer even consider hiring a special person. We just did it and made things work with extra effort.

another 50 grand for an organization that was over a million in the hole last year and they just keep spending money. Now we need another supervisors position while three cops sit at home collecting almost 300 grand a year between them. these cops don't chose to be there, it is police management who makes those decisions. Is this common in cop shops around Ontario to suspend everyone.

One guy is sitting on his butt coming up on two years. The accusation against him is that he didn't supervise properly. What a joke the place is. 150 grand a year because he didn't supervise right.

when will city leaders actually lead and call those in charge of the police to task for incompetence.

Now I have heard those underpaid civil servants are making overtime from the flood releif money driving around the east end over and over again. Don't we have enough cops already to cover this. Maybe some people won't get money because of this.

Another shining moment in city leadership.

Out of the 100 + employees they already have could they not delegate this to one of them that wasn't so busy? God we know they are out there. Do we really need to hire more people to add to a 30 million dollar budget that keeps going up?

a classic comment GRS

There is always enough city taxpayer money for the cops. Always. Whatever they want they get. Rubber stamp every request, rubber stamp every idea and run, all the while have a record on crime prevention that likely rivals Mexico's success at stemming the drug trade.

The place needs to be fumigated.
