First Nations communities across Ontario now have a new leader.
Nishnawbe-Aski Grand Chief Stan Beardy won a close vote in Toronto Wednesday morning to become the new Regional Chief for Ontario.
Beardy has been the NAN Grand Chief for the past 12 years. He announced in May that he was ready to challenge long-time Ontario Chief Angus Toulouse for the Regional Chief for Ontario position.
Today's vote in Toronto featured Beardy, Toulouse, and a third candidate, Walpole Island First Nation Chief Joseph Gilbert.
Gilbert was eliminated in the first round of voting.
In the second and final round of voting, Beardy defeated Toulouse by a narrow margin of 59 to 53.
The win means Beardy will have to give up his role with NAN.
The vote for the next NAN Grand Chief is scheduled for this August.
