First Nations communities across Ontario now have a new leader.

Nishnawbe-Aski Grand Chief Stan Beardy won a close vote in Toronto Wednesday morning to become the new Regional Chief for Ontario.

Beardy has been the NAN Grand Chief for the past 12 years. He announced in May that he was ready to challenge long-time Ontario Chief Angus Toulouse for the Regional Chief for Ontario position.

Today's vote in Toronto featured Beardy, Toulouse, and a third candidate, Walpole Island First Nation Chief Joseph Gilbert.

Gilbert was eliminated in the first round of voting.

In the second and final round of voting, Beardy defeated Toulouse by a narrow margin of 59 to 53.

The win means Beardy will have to give up his role with NAN.

The vote for the next NAN Grand Chief is scheduled for this August.

If you go by Beardy's track record of keeping NAN communities united and on the same page then this stint as Regional Chief for Ontario will be a short lived endevour .

I bet he is going to love this! Does it mean even more chance to be in the media and even more trips and travel? Maybe he should start doing what he is being paid to do...maybe there should be some accountability for his spending. Sad day for first nations people.
Sad day for first nations.
