A 24-year-old man is in custody after a machete incident on Thunder Bay’s south side.

Police say the suspect allegedly stopped a cyclist driving southbound on Edward Street and began advancing toward the man, who yelled across the street to see what the suspect wanted.

A vehicle drove by, stopping the suspect from immediately advancing, which is when the victim noticed the machete in the suspect’s hand.

The victim quickly left the area and phoned police.

The accused was arrested a short distance from the incident and has been charged with weapons dangerous to public peace, carry a concealed weapon and breach of probation.

Yup, I was the cyclist and it was not at all fun.

You should also add, that at the time I gave the description of the man with the machete over the phone, that it was very similar to my self; and when the police showed up, they thought I was the guy they were looking for.

TeaJay. Next time don't be such a coward and take care of scumbags like that the way they should be delt with. Calling the police just ensures he'll be able to do the same thing to someone else tonight.

Are you serious? If you see someone with a machete calling you over, and you do any different than what Teajay did, then you are an idiot, and tomorrows headline.

You want people to confront someone whose crazy enough to be carrying a machete down a main street during the day? You sound like Chael Sonnen, and I'm sure you know what happened to him last night.

It's not the justice system that is broken, it is our approach to mental health and poverty that is causing the problem.

CJ that's some bad advice....have you heard of 'bathsalts' that kids are using now.....it causes them to become aggressive, hallucinate, and have thoughts of 'eating' other people.....I went to a shag as it was my employee and seen first hand out of control a young man was.....scary stuff...call the police...don't fight people off by yourself...that how one gets injured, maimed, or killed.....

CJ...Your comment on TeaJay being a coward are really over the top. So you are saying it is ok to take the law into your own hands. If in direct harm it is ok to defend yourself with appropriate response, other than this it is illegal and you should not take further action. Calling a person a coward for calling the police to deal with this idiot is just insulting to TeaJay as his very action was the right one and while we all know the justice system appears to let people walk too easily after committing crimes, your response was certainly not the answer.

Ya that would be real smart then he would end up also getting charged when someone else calls police once they see the incident. Use your head a little before posting.

great advice c j. it is usually people like you that do nothing but flap your lips on the internet and then if a nut weilding man approached you with a machete you would cower like a baby and fill your pants like one too. why not step up and patrol the streets yourself since you are such a big strong man.

TeaJay - well done. Very glad you were intelligent and quick thinking and got yourself out of the area AND called police so the guy wouldn't make the same threats to others. Thank you....from the rest of us who could have been in the area and had something much more serious occur. Glad you are ok!
7/8/2012 1:32:03 PM
TeaJay says:
CJ, I don't think anyone REALLY knows how their going to reacts when someone try's to rob you with a machete.

The man stopped crossing the road, when traffic showed up. I guess it spooked him, because he turned around left and that is when I seen the machete. I stood there dumbfounded and totally caught off guard, watching him getting on his bike and leave. I waited until he was gone to bike off and call the police.

So you never know what your going to do when your thrust into a impromptu situations like that.

Second, to all those who hit agree of Cj's comment, I personally guarantee all of you that none of you would have done a thing, except for running away, there are way too many big talkers on this site who when faced with a challenge cower like babies

Oh, real big surprise there.

Jokingly say, I really think the city should adopt a bylaw that if your on probation, your BANNED FROM CITY LIMITS. It would make life for the rest of us so much nicer in this city.
