United Airlines is putting the international back into Thunder Bay’s airport.

The carrier on Tuesday announced its plans to launch a direct daily flight between the Thunder Bay International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, beginning Feb. 14, 2013.

The flight will leave Thunder Bay at 6 a.m., arriving in the Windy City about 95 minutes later. Return flights will depart Chicago at 6 p.m. and arrive in Thunder Bay at 8:40 p.m.

Service will be provided on a Canadair CRJ 50-seat aircrafts.

Passengers at Thunder Bay’s airport told Tbnewswatch.com that having a direct flight to the United States is a welcomed surprise.

Saquib Siddique, who stopped in Thunder Bay on his way back home to Dryden, said he hated having to always go to Toronto and have that three-hour wait.

“I hate changing flights so I would strongly recommend for a few international flights out of Thunder Bay,” Siddique said.

Dyki Nwosah shared Siddique’s opinion and wished there was a way to skip the trip to Pearson International Airport when Toronto wasn’t the final destination.

“Thunder Bay should have more direct flights,” Nwosah said. “That’s really impressive that they are getting flights to Chicago. It opens more opportunities with more direct flights.”
Thunder Bay International Airports Authority president and CEO Scott McFadden said they had been in talks with United for the past 18 months since Delta Air Lines pulled its flights to Minneapolis, Minn.

The airline and airport looked at market data to see if having that route to Chicago would be a good idea.

“United has come in saying they would like to do twice daily service and maybe even three times daily,” McFadden said. “It’s unlikely that we’ll see a flight to Minneapolis and Chicago. We’ll just be content if we can support and grow the one US destination.”

The flight to Chicago will be the only scheduled trans-border flight when it starts in February. The Thunder Bay airport did offer three charter flights that operated on a weekly basis.

So far, two of those charters have confirmed they will fly from Thunder Bay this winter, he said.

But the success or failure of the new route will depend on the community and the region, McFadden said.

“Chicago is one of United’s hubs,” he said. “You fly to the hub and that will enable passengers to connect to United’s entire network.”

Bookings are available immediately at www.united.com.

Bearskin Airlines is also in the process of adding a Thunder Bay to Minneapolis route, though the plan has been delayed for several months now.

Excellent news. Chicago is a fantastic city.

A quick test of fares on a random Friday to Sunday trip in March is about $450 round trip. Awesome!

NOW if only they would stop making all Canadian flights stop in Toronto before coming here, life really would be wonderful.

In order to leave for Edmonton one must fly from TBay to Toronto. THEN to Winnipeg and so one and so forth. Not to mention the huge lay overs in T.O. if you had to fly early mornings or late nights. FIX IT

I think you need to look at more flight options. Air Canada and WestJet both fly directly to Winnipeg, although only 1 or 2 flights a day.

It's true that a lot of the flights are routed to Toronto, which sucks if you're planning to go out west, but on the plus side at least most of the time it's a direct flight from Toronto (Air Canada and Westjet both have direct Toronto -> Edmonton flights).

Online fare tools do give some downright bizarre routes to different places (such as TBay->Toronto->Winnipeg), but if your schedule is a little flexible you can get to most large cities in Canada with a single, normally short, layover in Toronto or Winnipeg most of the time.

I haven't flown through Toronto in years going west. It's normally Thunder Bay > Winnipeg > Edmonton or Thunder Bay > Calgary > Edmonton with WestJet.

This should be a smartening up pill for Westjet. One cannot get out of Tbay to Phoenix - except driving to Duluth or Minnie if one wants to avoid a 5 am flight through Toronto. Westjet only offers overniters - ie stay in Calgary and come home the next morning.
Now one can leave for Chicago and get to Phoenix for as little as $749 or $933 if you want to go direct and not through Denver or vice versa. Way better than flying AC through that zoo called Pearson Airport.

WestJet has Phoenix connections out of Winnipeg. Not Toronto. If you book airmiles you get whatcha get (i.e. Calgary overnighters). I give this service 6 months until its on life support.
7/10/2012 8:19:03 PM
dynamiter says:
Yes it has service going to Phoenix ( but only in the winter - which is ok) but no service home without overnighting in Calgary ( or TO). No summer ( offseason) service. Punch it in and see - both flights go through Calgary and both are overniters. Even the Toronto flights go through Calgary at this time of the year.

This is good news for those directly visiting Chicago as well as going to other US destinations. For destinations on the west coast, location-wise Chicago isn't quite as good as Minneapolis was, but is less out of the way than flying to Toronto (and there will be a wider array of connecting flights in Chicago than Toronto).

Great news. The pricing looks to be 1/3 of which the Northwest flight was to Minne and puts us into the United system off to .... anywhere. Awesome. No idea why AC / Jazz didn't do this.

pagirl says:
$450 to just get to Chicago is too expensive. It will be over $600 return to get to any other US city through there, which is what it was with the old Northwest/Delta flight to Minneapolis.....which is why no one ever used it and they dropped it!!!!

So, who wants to go to Chicago? Really? and @ dynamiter...Allegiant out of Duluth to Mesa...about $350 RETURN...direct. And what happened to the company who was trying to get a flight out of TB direct to Minni? to connect to all points in the US?

dynamiter: ohara is as much or more of a zoo then pearson. overnighting to get some where does suck, but don't forget to add the cost of all checked baggage for transboarder flights on united.
7/10/2012 10:46:38 PM
dynamiter says:
Toytoy - Allegient is cheap but there still is the 4 hour plus drive to get to Duluth in time - great option - not only to MesaWilliams but also to Vegas. But still the drive and leaving the vehicle etc etc. Well worth the money most of the time. But I liked the Northwest-Phoenix route of before except some issues in Minnie in getting through border security and back through screening.

Thunderguard - been through Ohare a lot - much better than TO especially getting luggage and back through security and all the boarding areas are easily accessed - you dont need to walk 5 kilometers as you do in TO or Minnie for that matter.

Best case IMO would be for Westjet to modify their return route in the winter to eliminate the overniting - TBay - Winnipeg - Phoenix down and Phoenix -Calgary-Winnipeg-Tbay back would be nice for me - although Westjets rates have been climbing lately .

As a regular business traveller I think this is fantastic, my only concern is O'Hare airport... Ughhhh. But it's still great news! Will definitely take advantage of this, it will shave hours off of US flights!
