Hot dogs

The Humane Society is reminded people to keep their pets out of the car during warm weather.

Executive director Maryann Kleynendorst said while most owners think it’s only a matter of not leaving dogs in the car on hot days, no pet should have to suffer the cruelty and neglect of being stuck inside a car on a hot day.

“This would also apply to cats in any hot situations or horses in horse trailers. Any animal is susceptible,” she said.

Even a couple of minutes in a hot car can be a matter of life or death for a pet.

During a moderately warm temperature, like 25-degrees Celsius, the heat inside of a vehicle can reach temperatures of nearly 50C. Having water in the car for the pet is no excuse, Kleynendorst added.

“They’re in a great deal of distress and can result quite quickly in death,” she said. “How long would you want to sit in a hot car even with water? How long can you tolerate that?”

Heavy panting, diarrhea and lethargy are all signs of heat stroke for animals.

If they show any signs, Kleynendorst said it’s important to get them to a cool area as quick as possible and start to hydrate.

“You don’t’ want to plunge them into ice cold water, use tepid water or damp towels,” she said.

While there have no cases of people leaving pets in cars in the region, two animals have died so far this season in Ontario. Anyone caught leaving their pet in a vehicle can face a $60,000 fine, a lifetime ban on pet ownership and two years in prison.

“It’s a very serious neglect and cruelty issue,” Kleynendorst said.

“It’s taken very seriously.”

Kleynendorst encourages anyone who sees an animal in distress to contact police immediately.

I'm not going to discount the fact that leaving an animal in a car is a serious matter, but consider this..

if you're convicted of a contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (usually as a result of an investigation into a workplace injury and/or death), you, as an individual can be charged up to $25,000 and 12 months in jail.

Just leave your pets at home when you go shopping. Make separate trips to the store and to bring your dog to get his/her exercise. Save lives by planning your day.

Does it matter if the car is parked in the shade? Even in the morning it's 25 celcius out and every morning at the same establishment I see a little dog inside a car while it's owner is inside an air conditioned building enjoying his coffee with his buddies...one morning I actually thought the dog was dead! BTW the car has no air conditioning.

Except that when police are called, nothing is done. To them, it's "just a dog" and they aren't trained to handle the situation.

Take a walk around the walmart parking lot - you are guaranteed to find at least one dog in a car, even on a 30+ day, some without water or so much as a window open (as if that would help)

$60,000 are you kidding me, people that rob macs, stab people and break and enters get away with alot less than this. All these people get is probation and a couple months in jail if that and innocent people just running into a store for 5minutes leave their dog inside get fined and JAIL TIME, no wonder cops don't panic when they get these calls they have other important stuff to take care of. I am an owner of a dog and this is pretty ridiculous. Now all the negative comments will be coming in.

Worse yet than pets even, is seeing elderly people being left behind in a car while the driver runs in for some purchases. I found a tiny elderly lady locked in a car today, sweating bullets. She was most uncomfortable.

In Walmart lot - thumbs down to the idiot in the big black truck parked with his windows down about one inch each - in the sun - 2 dogs - I informed him that this was dangerous for the dogs and not acceptable. He told me he was only going to be "2 minutes". i reminded him that was impossible and i was going to stand by his truck until he returned. i also suggested he put on a fur coat and sit in the truck for "2 minutes" in the sun and try it out - see how he liked it. As he walked towards the door I reminded him in 2 minutes I was calling the police. He called me some foul names and got in his truck and sped off. I know he will do this again as he only thinks of himself.
I also have a concern with idiots walking or running with their dogs in the middle of the day on hot pavement. Maybe they should also put on a fur coat with bare feet and walk for blocks on the hot cement. Some of these dogs have not been walked in the winter and now being forced to keep up with the owner! Insane!

Curious, you are my hero. Every time I see a dog left inside a car the owner is never around, so glad you did that. Hopefully he remembers you doing that next time he things about leaving his dogs behind.

Prepare to have your window smashed if I pass your vehicle and see a pooch inside panting. And I'll deal with the consequences.....

I don't leave me dog in the car on hot days, but if you tried to smash a window in my vehicle with my dog inside, he would not take kindly to you invading his space. You can call the police to get me arrested and fined, but call an ambulance too. you'll probably need it.

Last time I saw this happen was on Victoria Day when I went to the movies with a friend. I ended up parking beside a car with two dogs inside, the vehicle still running and the windows slightly rolled down. I took a photo to record the information and phoned Animal Services, who said because it was on private property there was nothing they could do. I called non-emerge and they said they couldn't do anything either, and the plate I gave them was for someone from Niagara Falls, not in town. No one could do anything that day.

The woman tried to argue that since she had a remote starter it was okay to see a 2 hour movie with her kids while leaving the dogs inside. Pathetic. And what exactly are we supposed to do when we see this happening if Animal Services and the police won't step in?

Easy way to solve the problem, next time you see a dog, cat, or elderly person sitting in a vehicle unattended call the cops. Now when they get there they should remove the elderly or pets from the vehicle and stick the driver back in and have them sit there for a hour or so. They just might get the hint, but then again they just might be to stupid.

Take a walk through the Intercity or Wal-Mart parking lots on any given hot day, people are cruel.
