A ‘new start’

Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources says he’s thrilled the province’s Superior Court approved the sale of the Terrace Bay mill.

“This heralds a new start for the Terrace Bay mill and one I think will be truly sustainable,” said Michael Gravelle (Lib., Thunder Bay-Superior North) Friday.

The decision came at 5 p.m. Thursday from the court to allow the purchase of the mill to the India-based Birla Group. The sale was being held back because of a $220 million bid for the mill made last week by the China-based Tangshan Sanyou Xinda Chemical Fibre Co.

The Birla Group plans to invest $250 million into converting the plant to produce rayon fibre for clothing.

Once the mill is fully operational again it will employ at least 275 people as well as create about 335 woodland jobs.

“The conversion process will mean this is a mill that will be in operation for many, many years to come. It feeds a market the Birla Group themselves have in terms of the manufacturing of clothing products and that’s really good and exciting news,” said Gravelle.

The Minister added that the province worked hard with the court monitor Ernst and Young and with the Birla Group to come to a deal and he will speak to the province’s role in the securing of the deal once the final contract is in place.

There are still some final contract details that need to be completed before the sale of the mill is finalized, which could be within the next week, the minister said.

Although he did say part of the deal was the company guaranteeing the 275 jobs at the mill. The mill is expected to start up in October.

“(The Birla Group) is very keen to open the operation up again as quickly as possible. The unions have ratified their agreement in a strong fashion,” Gravelle said.

A representative with the United Steelworkers Union spoke with CKPR Radio Thursday and said about 78 per cent of the union members voted in favour of the employment agreement.

someone please correct me if i am wrong......so the Birla Group os buying the mill at 220 million, and the government forgiving the 25 million outstanding balance. But the tax payers will be on the hook for. And declined the China based bid that would have had no further burden on the tax payers, and garunteed more jobs, plus interest in the Longlac, and Nakina sawmills as well, and this is a good thing? Something doesn't make sense here. Very happy for Terrace Bay and the pending start up of the mill, but would it not make more sense to have gone with the China based bid, and had more people working, and better serve numerous communities that have been desimated by the forestry sector?

The Chinese bid didn't seem to play by the rules and follow the bidding process. What's the point of having a bid process if someone can just show up after it expires and win?

China is a communist run dictatorship with terrible human rights records and a practice of keeping their currency artificially low. It has none of the freedoms that we enjoy...try watching Youtube in that country. Any company that wants to do business in China HAS to enter into a partnership with a Chinese company. Many of China's new "products" are pirated, copy-right infringed, or out-right stolen from the rightfull owners....I could go on.

India is the worlds largest democracy, a member of the Commonwealth and a staunch ally of Canada. It's constitution is similar to ours and it's people have the same democratic rights as us including it's women. Though not without its faults (there is a lot of poverty as in China) India is a far more respected (and less feared) country than China.

Very happy the Indian company bought the mill for the above mentioned reasons alone.

Tell me again whay I should believe anything that comes out of Gravelles mouth. He represents a serial liar who sits as Premiere in our Province.

I thinks we've all heard the promises of jobs, jobs and more jobs. Guaranteed jobs in Terrace Bay and elsewhere in the province.

The Liberals have tanked the Ontario economy and are giving away the future in terms of monies owed to the Province. Buchanen & Fricot walk and our grandchildren pay for them lining his own pockets.

Several days ago, a former employee expressed his concern about KB walking away leaving the employees high and dry. And its true. But who represents the future generations who pay the price for the poor fiscal decisions of the Lieberal govt.

Not dalton, not mikie or billie. They won't be around when the premiere's credit card bill gets revolked.

Shame on Mikie. I thought that he represented all of us, present and future.

do you know no other way to put postings on this site. Are you incapable of discussing an issue without insultive school yard language. I think not.

It's kind of funny that Ontario's economy while still fighting to get going seems to be tied to the US economy which is still in the tank, our largest trading partner in the world. Of course the idea that our economy may somehow be connected to the larger global economy is likely too difficult a concept for some.

You have spent a lot of years bashing these guys over and over, yet they are still elected. That must mean that you do not speak for the group, only for the handful who find something to ciriticize in everything. It is a sad way of life.

I am sure that Terrace Bay is happy and many others as well.

As for the 24 million, did we want the new company to pay this and risk this deal not happening?

Maybe we should walk away from forestry all together. I wonder if Terrace Bay would agree with that idea.

aaahhhhh/ Lori - right on cue with your "how dare you pick on Mikie" comments.

Let's be honest here for a minute. Mikie and Billie are passengers on the train wreck financing trip that their leader McLiar is taking them on. And let's also be honest, you have as little knowledge about fiscal responsiblity as your 3 heros do. Drummond told McLiar to slow down the continuous wasteful spending of money. The bond rating agencies have put Ontario on credit watch. Drummond would view your comments about the waste of $24 million as "well if the money's gone then it's gone" as another example of how the province is getting flushed down the dumper. So .... we should listen to you why? Our children and grandchildren should put these clowns on a pedestal why? Our future, which is heavily mortgaged, is going to get better how?

Today, McLiar will suggest a ban on handguns in Toronto. Later this aft, he will also ban mosquitos in Tbay for Mikie and Billie. Good luck on that one. Photops tonite

YQT, I will let you do your tet e tet with Lori but can I offer an opinion. The conservatives increased the debt to, only they lied about it. And they did it during a world wide boom while telling us the books were balanced. The NDP increased the debt also and were a disaster. So no party in my view can be holier than thou on the financial issue. Some of your financial comments are accurate however you do have an issue with Liberals as opposed to issues. This issue is about a small northern town, jobs and a possible future. You fail to tell us your position clearly. Do you suggest that province call in the loan from the new owner. What if they walked away because of that. Do you still take that position. Hundreds of jobs, tax base, saving a small town. Pick your poison. Either let all small Ontario towns die, or try and support them. The conservative way is to let everyone but the rich fend for themselves. The Liberals are far from perfect, but I will take them over your alternative

yqtyqt says:
The conservatives did increase the debt. After the fed Libs cut transfer payments to the provinces. I'm not saying that the cuts werent warranted since they had to reign in their own spending, but the governing party in Ont had no option than to cut essential programs &/or to borrow. The situation created by McGuinty is a disaster So here's the questions for you - Why have the bod-rating agencies sent out the warnings about the massive debt. Why did Drummond make recommendations about the out of control spending.

Honestly, I think Lori has no clue about govt finances and fails to comprehend that out of control spending leads to out of control debt.

Finally, the Terrace Bay deal may or may not have happened without the loan forgiveness. We'll never know for sure. But I wouldn't take the word of a blatant liar to the bank. Did you ever think that maybe the $24 million shouldnt have happened at all. But, again it was to lib friendly KB and Fricot. And we know they like spending.

In unrelated news, well, related news because it impacts development of natural resources, job creation and economic prosperity in Northern Ontario, what has become of that 30 day eviction notice to mining companies operating/exploring in the ROF announced on June 22nd by six FN? Whatever became of that July 5th mining court case by Neskantaga FN?

Seems to quiet.

I'm sure the Lawyers haven't quite drained Neskantaga's bank account yet , "they" should be broke sometime soon . As to the eviction notice by the six Fn's that are not anywhere near the R of F , the floatplane operators probably won't take them to Koper Lake to evict anyone .

Whether Ontario MPPs were underpaid before may be debatable, but Bill 173 makes them first among equals. The highest paid provincial legislators, with the best severance package, and the most generous RRSP-based pension plan.

And once again CANREBEL53, you and the 28 people who agreed with you are proof positive of what is wrong with this site when they allow completely false information to be presented.

MPP's do not get a pension. NONE but then that has been posted here only about a thousand times. Not surprising you haven't seen it. You would have to read.

MP's, those in OTTAWA, HYER, RAFFERTY, they get one after 6 years, meaning after this term in office, they will get a pension for the rest of their lives. 6 years in a job and you get an indexed pension for life. Things need to change in Ottawa.

please get your facts straight.

Well LOri. Why do you come to this site it you think it contains information which is contrary to the best interest of your bootlicker buddies.

Can you tell us which party cancelled the MPPs pensions. Please do tell us.

As for facts:

Aren't you the one who summed up the waste of $24 million on the liberal donation to buchanen and friscot as " well if the $24 million is gone, then its gone". Who cares about our children and grandchildren?

Aren't you the one who doesn't know the difference between CPP and OAS when it comes to pension reform. Are you still worried about the changes to CPP when you dead wrong?

Aren't you the one who couldn't locate information from the Public Salary Disclosure Act before you posted false information on this site.

And aren't you the one who spouts off about financial data when you haven't got a clue?

Just admit it... YOu are wrong with most of your "facts". They represent liberal fiction and folklore, not accurate information.

lori, maybe you should go and check the site I posted before you start commenting, a funded RRSP pension is just that, a pension funded by the tax payers. I may not get a lot of thing dead right but I do go and google to see if I maybe close, maybe you should do the same.
