Prince Arthur’s Landing is a vision come to life for former Thunder Bay mayor Lynn Peterson.

“This is a vision that came about through the community, through the public, through the waterfront development committee,” Peterson said Friday at the formal celebration for the completion of phase one of the development of Prince Arthur’s Landing.

“This is the culmination of a lot of people’s work for a long time and a lot of dedication and a lot of tenacity was required through the process to get us here today.”

Peterson was mayor of the city during the planning stages of the development and was one of the driving forces behind the project. Current city mayor Keith Hobbs acknowledged her work during the ceremony Friday afternoon.

And Peterson felt a sense of accomplishment as she looked around the park.

Story continues after video ...

“It’s got a spirit to it that reflects the city of Thunder Bay and the citizens,” she said. “It’s a place I love and I think most people do.”

Peterson said she came with her grandchildren to the splash pad the other day and was surprised to see not just kids enjoying the water, but also senior members of the community.

“It was awesome. Every generation was here and every generation was enjoying it,” she said.

“That’s what this was meant to be.”

Also elated at the finished product was waterfront project manager Katherine Dugmore.

“It couldn’t feel better than this,” she said, adding she felt an intense satisfaction.

“We’ve always said this project is incredibly complex. When you see the subtlety, the elegance of the detailing, the interpretation, the art, the rich detail of the project is just astounding.”
Having worked in design for many years, Dugmore said usually projects don’t always live up to expectations, but Prince Arthur’s Landing exceeded them.

The second stage of phase one is the private development of condominiums and a hotel. The private developers are in the midst of selling the condos and once they’ve sold enough, Dugmore said they will begin work on the underground parking structure for both the condos and hotel.
She said work could start on that as early as later this year.

Dugmore will be presenting a report to council in late summer or early fall on Phase two of the waterfront development, which includes plans for a new marina in the Pool 6 area.

Prince Arthur’s Landing cost a total of $58 million, with more than $15 million each coming from the provincial and federal governments. The rest was provided by the City of Thunder Bay.

MP Peter Van Loan (Con., York-Simcoe) attended the celebration on behalf of the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and said revitalization projects like Prince Arthur’s Landing improve quality of life, which is important in making communities more attractive.

Thunder Bay’s new waterfront is a promising foot forward, he said.

“Thunder Bay here has done a very brilliant job of combing not only the broader natural environment of being in Northern Ontario and on the Great Lakes but also having an urban environment here to combine with a downtown that’s hopefully going to see further revitalization,” Van Loan said.

So, isn't the celebration premature if phase one has not been completed, and likely won't until 2014? Unless this is a formal celebration for the completion of the first stage of phase one? This celebration seems 'staged'...lol

I just do not get it....seeing the marina as it stands now as compared to how it looked before this construction project...I still do not see 100 million dollars difference now that all of their phase 1 is complete.!

Not truly seeing any major bang for the bucks spent there is all I can and will ever state.

There is a reason lyn is no longer mayor. The people tossed her aside and a major reason for that was her hand in the waterfront project. The marina should have been expanded leaving the existing and moving south along the shore. I admit what is there is nice, but it was nice before. I think the biggest dabacal of this entire project is this condo and hotel crap. We literally gave away some of the nicest land on the planet so that some rich people can sell some condos to some more rich people so they can get richer! I am not surprised at all that the condos are selling! How could they not. They will be beautiful with a spectacular view and amazing location. But the marina is public and and is supposed to be for everyone. Now that privatization has begun, wait and see the results of that. The marina will become for the privileged with condo and hotel owners being catered too. What a shame. Maybe some day they will even get those bathrooms by the play equipment open!

A formal celebration for the completion...I guess they couldn't be bothered to invite the general public.
Why was this formal celebration not made public? Is this setting the tone for the future??
I guess if you bought a condo you were invited!

I wonder how much phase two will cost us City taxpayers, assuming all the costs of phase one are completed, and on budget? a splash pad is awesome, but not worth all the hype and cost. and those locals who complain about the $2 water bottle cost at the blues fest must not realize that their taxes have gone up and will go up for generations.

Come on people, $100 million dollars spent on concrete, skate board park, a splash pad and rusted poles.
Yes, Lynn can take credit for this disaster in the making. Hobbs is just a follower on a leash.
He should be booted out too.

Phase Two...big snag story???
I recall a couple years back Mr Commisso saying the City could not afford phase two Marina. He said it would have to be private $.

It will be interesting to see who moves into these luxury condos. How many of our present day City Admin and Councillors will be buying a condo. These folk with their bloated pay cheques will be buying them. Shortly they will be giving themselves a 'good performance' evaluation and another pay increase. Just wait and see.

I guess they had to bring in the swat team to hold back all the visitors rushing to the city to get a look at this. That would have to be the explanation that there's hardly anyone in the clip.

I was not and am not a supporter of this park. I do like some of the stuff done, but the cost was astronimical.
I also did not like the bent poles but recently I saw them up close. I cannot believe how ugly they are.

They are not just bad, they are horrible. Yet someone picked these and thought they were good. Amazing.

I don't think Lyn should consider this something to be proud of.

I agree with other posters; why was the public not invited? Sounds like this came about rather suddenly. Maybe they wanted to get it over with before too many people get a good look at the agreement with Developer, and see just what we gave up. It's a far cry from the original plan, for sure. And that was bad enough with 3 private buildings.
Now, in addition, they gave up our historic CN Station, land adjacent to splash pad now being used for parking, plus future option for the grassy area where the lawn chairs are.
There really isn't much new for the public to do or see. Just expensive buildings we will pay to operate, with not much going on.
And the fancy architect who designed the site, WHY were the stepping stones, with a drop-off to the lake, put right beside a splashpad? Maybe it wasn't supposed to be a splashpad, but just a fancy fountain. It is capable of spraying water far higher. Was making it a "splashpad" an afterthought? Had to make the paying public happy!

commonsense says:
We also need to remember when this project was started, "all sorts of jobs" were going to be "created". Other than the construction jobs, what jobs resulted? A caretaker for the proposed condos?
Let's not forget the round-the-clock security that monitors the fountain, and the young employees texting all day sitting in the office in the "wi-fi" building. Taxpayer dollars spent should be for productive work, that provides a service or gives value. The millions spent making the park bigger so we could sell a chunk of it does us no good.
The city spent all the money budgeted for both phases on Phase 1 only. They know of big environmental problems that will likely mean no phase 11.

It's laughable this group got to have a (taxpayer funded) event to celebrate their "success", when they should be ashamed how poorly it was managed.

I really can't understand why people would stand behind what's being done to the Water Front when it's being handed over to Private Investors. Just what going to happen when people in the Condo start complaining about noise and possible damages to their property, stop the general public from have access to this area. I guess only time will tell, but it's a lot of money being wasted that could have gone towards better things.
