Text fraud hits Rainy River area

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

The lure of free Air Miles has Rainy River OPP warning the public a text scam has hit the region.

Police say they’ve received several reports from people receiving a text redirecting them to a fraudulent website, with promises of an abundance of free rewards points.

Once directed to the site, the victim is then asked to provide personal information or credit card numbers.

The OPP reminds the public to be wary of such offers and treat such messages as suspicious.

Personal information should be kept confidential and shared only with trusted and verified sources, they added.

You mean I am not going to get that free iPad they told me I won? :(

Seriously though, scams like this should be well known as the sun being in the sky. People should automatically know to delete/not go to this site. Its actually pretty sad that people need to be told its a scam.

Some time ago I was sent a link to a great comback. The person said he was a police detective and that the caller had reached a homocide investigation scene. it runs about 10 minutes and is hilarious !!! Going to try it next time I get a call.

I love the title. Just maybe Rainy River should get some internet counseling.

As if this sort of scam hasn't been around for more than 10 years already, cmon.

I'm sure the kind folks of Rainy River are embarrassed that this hit the news. Maybe news is the wrong word.
