I would like to say that C.N. rail should be forced in some way to at the very least sandblast and paint this bridge...correctly address the top decking plates along with their rehabilitation of their lines...it is such an eyesore it is not like the railway does not have the money to do so!

CN doesn't have to do any of the above. The primary purpose of the auto lanes on that bridge are for emergency services only. Maybe CN should start charging a toll to cross the bridge to pay for the maintenance to the car lanes. You want to use it, pay to use it or take the long way to purchase your cigarettes and gasoline. I don't understand why people think their conveniences should be funded by someone else.

FORCING CN to atleast sandblast & paint the bridge isnt anybodys call but CN's!

Thats like me telling you your house should atleast be repainted cause I dont like the way it looks now.

CN will obviously just close the bridge for traffic & use it for the trains only if they are FORCED into doing anything.

Enjoy taking the longer way around with an attitude like that Jimmyboy!

Jimmyboy, you do realize that CN could close the bridge to all vehicle traffic if they like to at anytime so be thankful that they allow the city to use it. Who is going to force them?

reply to those who posted...I would think that C.N. rail would step up to the plate and seriously address the overall condition...looking at the state of disrepair that it is in C.N. obviously has fallen way short with their ongoing maintenance program...and to "Tom Sanderson" since when is the primary purpose of the auto lanes on that bridge are for emergency services only?

The city has an agreement with FWFN to provide emergency services. They also have an agreement with CN to allow said vehicles to use this bridge. CN is in the business of making money not satisfying every brainwave that miserable people come up with. Don't like it, don't look at it. Problem solved.

I'm not sure about your facts on the car lanes for emergency purposes only. For decades this bridge was part of highway 61...so I think it's past use was for more than just emergency purposes. I do agree though that no one can force CN to paint the bridge. But as long as it is open to the public, they do have a legal obligation to maintain the safety of the bridge.
Historical significance aside, I think it is time for the city and FWFN to step up and build a proper bridge across the Kam. People using the bridge aren't using only for gas and cigarettes. My kids play hockey and play quite often at the FWFN arena and there are many city homes on Mountain Road. It is also a pretty busy foot bridge for FWFN residents to do their shopping in Westfort.

It depends on the terms of the agreement between the City and CN. If CN, as part of that agreement, is obligated to provide vehicular access across the Kam on the bridge, then a certain standard would most likely need to be maintained. That being said, the agreement would be close to 100 years old and the language within it might not address most current issues.

Jimmy you really do live in your own little world don't you? This bridge is privately owned and is on private property. You're always going to hate government if you don't understand their job.

About time they fixed the James st. bridge, one of those sharp broken metal plates sliced right through my friend's tire... Very dangerous.

If it really bothers you that much jimmy why don't you get some sheet metal and start replacing the steel decking yourself ?

How about putting up proper signage to those who live out on Mountain road and surrounding areas? Nothing like being late for work because you have to turn around after discovering a road closure. I thought it was mandatory to inform people and guide them to another exit. I was so annoyed by this that I'm still feeling frustrated about this issue, and this happened yesterday morning!

Maybe next time read a little more, it was posted, in the paper and on this site, but since you didn't see it on this site I don't think you would have seen anything posted on the side of the road either.
