OPP report busy long weekend

Officials with the OPP say it was a busy long weekend for officers with the Thunder Bay detachment area.

Sgt. Shelley Garr says 503 speeding tickets were handed out in this region. Along with the speeding tickets, police issued 24 tickets for seatbelt infractions, 12 impaired driving charges and five distracted driving charges.

Police also laid two stunt driving charges.

Across the province, five fatalities were reported during the long weekend. Four people died in highway incidents while one person died following an incident on a provincial waterway.

Great job on the 503 charges being laid. The city police could do that every day on Memorial and Water street. Throw in a couple dozen idiot using handheld device charges to sweeten the nut pie.

I know people want to have fun on long weekends, but please don't leave your common sense at home. Bring it with you.

If, just before doing something, you think "this might be a bad idea".. it probably is... just saying...

Speeding is out of control in Thunder Bay and area. Police need to focus on this until drivers get the message. Give out tickets, no leniency!

stop playing blind & realize alcohol is the root of stupidity.

Sure... drunk driving can be a problem sometimes, especially during the times you mentioned.

But speeding happens ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. It is a vastly more significant problem than impaired driving.
