In the dark?

By Jeff Labine, tbnewswatch.com

The province has kept Northern Policy Institute details close to its chest and that has the Chamber of Commerce’s president worried for future development in the region.

The Ontario government announced the creation of the policy institute along with the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario back in March of last year. The government handed over $5 million from the Northern Heritage Fund Corporation to jump-start it.

The Northern Policy Institute is intended to act as an independent guide for development in the North by drafting polices and designs specifically to this region.

Lakehead University President Brian Stevenson and Laurentian University President Dominic Giroux agreed to help guide implementation of the growth plan. The university presidents presented a report to the province, although, little information about the policy has been made public.

Stevenson said he could not comment on the issue when contacted by tbnewswatch.com on Thursday, saying it was a provincial issue.

Harold Wilson, president of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, said he thinks the province hasn’t been open with how things have been going and he and many others are frustrated with not knowing what’s going on.

He added that he has heard rumours since March that something was about to be released, but so far not even a draft has been released.

“I would hate to see them propose something or worse to announce something that hadn’t had a chance to be vetted or discussed with people in Northwestern Ontario,” Wilson said.

“I don’t know what think right now. I would hate to think that they are just going to roll something out saying ‘here’s a done deal’ and if we object to it, it looks like we’re never happy. No one has had a chance to see this thing for a long time. It is vexing that it has taken this long.”

Wilson is involved with a joint task force that’s involved in regional economic development and he said it relies heavily on a northern policy. Wilson asked about the report filed by Stevenson and Giroux as well as general updates but the answer he keeps getting is that the policy is coming soon, he said.

Minister of Natural Resources Michael Gravelle said Minister of Northern Development and Mines Rick Bartolucci will be releasing more details about the policy institute soon.

Bartolucci took over the Northern Development Mines from Gravelle following the October provincial election.

Gravelle said Bartolucci wanted to look over the policy institute before giving out any information about but didn’t think that delayed anything from being released.

“It remains a firm commitment of the government to move forward with a not-for-profit, independent Northern Policy Institute,” Gravelle said. “Without me saying anything too inappropriate, I think you can expect something very soon from Minister Bartolucci. The challenge is to put together a structure that really will work for the North.”

MPP Gilles Bisson (NDP, Timmins – James Bay) called the situation with the policy institute the “announcement that never happens.”

He said the government wanted some good news prior to the October election because they felt vulnerable in the North.

He said the idea of having an policy institute is a good one but the way the Liberal government has dealt with it has been “lackluster”.

“Here we are more than a year after they announced it and we’re still, as far as I know, not up and running,” Gilles said. “I think they are trying to fix their political image in Northern Ontario. I think the Liberals have a lot to answer for when it comes to how they handled a number of key files.”

Harold - how dare you critcize the province. What's the matter with you. Don't you know that you're biting the liberal hand that feeds you. Even if the food is coming from out grandchildrens pockets, don't you realize that Mikie and Billie will guarantee you some provincial money that they don't have.

Consultation - don't you realize that this was a re-elction "feel good" announcement?

And as the chamber of commerce, you should know, money doesn't just fall from the liberal heavens.

Deficits of historic proportions just happen on their own. And Mikie has some real business world experience & background to back up his comments.

yqt I will try for the 100th time. I like the Ontario Liberals, but don't agree with everything. I voted for the Ottawa Tories but don't agree with everything. I don't like debt but if they are spending it, I will gladly take it here. Ottawa spent billions also, but very few pennies came here. Ontario's policies or actions have created a boom in the housing market here and in Atikokan not seen in decades if ever. Our health care is better, our roads are better, our infrastructure is better and while I don't agree with everything in energy, even blowhards experts about everything like yourself know the system needed an overhaul and investment. Since you have been writing here, the Liberals have not done one thing that is good. How ridiculous are you. Like any gov't they are good and bad, but for us here they have been way better than any past gov't. If that last statement is wrong, feel free to prove me wrong. Name the gov't that has been better for us. But you won't, because you can't.

We all know that for that last few decades, Ontario ends at Sudbury. We constantly get screwed by the politics that go on in Southern Ontario. We need to split. PERIOD. Take our resources, work out our issues with the First Nations people, and become our own province that Southern Ontario can not pillage. I am sick and tired of policies being dictated by people on the other side of the province, and I am sure you are as well. It is time it happened. Or do you want to live in the armpit of the province forever?

Why should anyone care about a provincially-sanctioned northern policy institute?
One more regional political body for Queen's Park to ignore. We're absolute suckers if we're pinning our hopes on this. If it's not a panel stuffed full of Liberal sympathizers and contributors, then it won't be taken seriously. If northerners truly want something resembling a unified body that can actively lobby on northern issues in Toronto, they need to form one on their own and come up with a strategy that gets results. I think the First Nation chiefs have a few good ideas.

Speaking of being kept in the dark and treated like a mushroom, hey...how is the City's foray into the investment world doing? Didn't they roll a pile of taxpayer money into an large investment in the STOCK MARKET (around '07) ??? How are our shares' values been doing?

"in the dark" welcome to how all residents feel! Kind like the way the city administration works

If you have questions about things that administration are doing then why not ask the question to administration members themselves?

Mr. Commissio returns emails all the time in orderly fashion, sometimes the same day. Mr. Adam's, Mr. Mauro all provide informative answers to questions posed by citizens and almost all staff is the same where they answer shortly after the email has been received.

If you want an answer go to the source. Now if you agree or disagree with the decision is up to you but your not 'left in the dark'.

Conservative Larry Hebert is worried about the power supply in the north and was critical of what is happening here.

Two days later a conservative MPP comes to Thunder Bay and announces that the gov't is not handling the ring of fire properly.

Here long time conservative Harold Wilson comes aboard to tell us that the gov't is doing something else wrong. It has been long rumoured that Harold wants to run for the conservatives here in Thunder Bay.

It is just a coincidence that three conservatives could find so much wrong within days of each other.

I don't know if Wilson is correct or not in his assessment but it is harjd to read this article objectively given his past political posturing and the recent conservatives expressing their views quite fequently on this site. Harold you need to cover up your bias is showing. If this is really an issue, lets see others discuss it, not conservative Harold Wilson. Then we can decide if it is real or made up hookeyism.

If either of these conservatives actually does run, as opposed to morons like "Moe Comuzzi" or Fred Gilbert, I will vote for them!*

*Provided Tim Hudak and/or Stephen Harper are replaced with more capable leaders.

If I didn't know any better I'd say Mr Wilson just showed us one of the planks in his platform to become the PC candidate in ThunderBay .
