As a student, Richard Garneau bought a chainsaw and went to work in the forest, harvesting trees, a job now done by machine.

Now as the president and CEO of Resolute Forest Products, Garneau returned to that same block of trees he first helped cut down and noticed those trees are almost ready to be harvested again. Replanting is an important aspect of forest management and it’s something Resolute has been working on for the past 30 years.

Garneau helped plant the company’s billionth tree in Northern Ontario on Neebing Avenue, just down the road from its Thunder Bay site, Friday morning. A one-metre tall white spruce tree was planted here in the city as well as in Fort Frances and Iroquois Falls.

“What we wanted to do was really show that we have done a lot of work on sustainability over the years and the billionth tree doesn’t happen very often,” he said.

With natural disasters like fires, Garneau said replanting is important to help increase the volume of wood that can be harvested.

“I think everything that could be done to increase potential production of the forest is going to benefit the communities all across northeastern and northwestern Ontario,” Garneau said.

It takes about 50 to 60 years for a forest to grow back after it’s been harvested and Resolute does what it feels is appropriate to protect the environment. They plant more than 25 million trees every year.|

Minister of Natural Resources Michael Gravelle said the replanting effort not only creates jobs, but it also helps to slow down the impacts of climate change.

“The long and short of it is that forest renewal is one of the real pillars of the sustainable forest management in the province of Ontario,” he said. “Resolute has been a remarkable partner in that process. This is an incredibly important component.”

Resolute Forest Products manages about 4.5 million hectares of Crown and private lands in Ontario.

Now all Garneau has to do is come up with $1.9 billion,to top up the shortfall in the company pension plan.

What a joke, the real story out of resolute today is that they are 1.9 billion short on there pension fund for there employees up from 1.3 when they got out of insolvency. This company should have went bankrupt. The only thing that keeps this company alive is robbing there own employees.

Pretty idiotic comment - a whole bunch of pension plans are in a state of shortfall. Even small personal plans and things such as RRSP's are not making much money due to low interest rates. This problem is solely and totally in the governments lap - they've allowed the companies to have contribution holidays when the markets are doing well. They allow companies to get up to 5 years behind if they like - rather than making them pay each and every year. They put pension plans at the back of the trough when companies do go bankrupt.

We need a serious discussion on pensions, both private and government plans including CPP and making lives better for all Canadians and how to transition into an more equitable arrangemnent ( as opposed to the haves of government employees and teachers) - but this type of comment is not helpful.

True, that a lot of pensions are in shortfall due to low interest rates and the economy, but Resolute made promises that were broken and saying that this is the Gov's fault is ridiculous...A company should be accountable plain and simple without big brother's help. Companies like Resolute lobbied for pension changes to be there personal slush fund long ago. The private sector has to do the right thing for there employees, yet they keep doing the wrong things. Besides this pension fiasco, Resolute or Abib stole everything thing from there shareholders and sold off property(they got for pennies from taxpayers) to line the pockets of there executives

Destitute Forest Products is going out of business the smart way. Rob their pensioners, cheat the taxpayer and pay their executives big bonuses and all the while pay the least amount of money possible. When I die my widow will be at the mercy of corporate greed with nobody to turn to for assistance. I wish I would have worked somewhere else all those (lost) years

so Resolute matches donations from it's employees of $7,500, making their total donation $15K...or one-third of the daily $37K for one day to keep the DRC on goal.

Look up the list of top employers in Thunder Bay.

Resolute has donated $15K

The provincial, municipal and federal funded top employers will donate zilch.

Metro is involved in loonie days

Zellers is closed

Valhalla Inn already stepped up to the plate prior to the DRC being formed.

So it is up to Bombardier, McDonalds, OLG Casino, Walmart, the Superstore and Bearskin Air (who just ran a charity golf tourny) to come up with big bucks. The collective $60K they might raise will not even cover two days of the DRC's goal.

The DRC is searching under sofa cushions for loose change to pay the bills. What a joke!

p.s. where does the money to compensate ALL flood victims (insured or not) who applied for the $207 water rebate come from? yep, our tax dollars. so long $200k to $600k+!

Nice headline. I can see where the billion trees went. How about the billion dollars?
Was supposed to go to our pension plan. Not top dog's pockets. Six years and still waiting.
25 years of that hell hole was just not worth it in the end. Paid into a plan that never returned. Unreal.

I wonder with Hobbs in attendance....what number is this in his yearly tally to date of events attended....if only Hobbs and Gravelle really understood how many people this company has screwed over and too what extent....would they still be so excited to be a part of this farce.???

Don't see how you are renewing the forest with just one kind of tree.(Evergreens) What about Birch and Poplar? What is the ratio of harvested to 1 billion planted?

The Badger Mountain Hermit says:
I can enjoy the forest for what it is. But most of the time like everyone else, it's just a place for me to strip resources from. But I never high-grade nor totally clean a spot out, and leave plenty of time for natural replenishment before the next time.
