OPP arrest two people in Nipigon in suspected gas theft

By tbnewswatch.com

Two people have been arrested after giving the OPP chase Monday morning.

Monday morning Marathon OPP were alerted to a dark grey Dodge Caravan travelling westbound on Highway 17 from the White River Area that was involved in the theft of gas from a Wawa gas station.

The vehicle had failed to stop for police.

Marathon officers spotted a van matching the description east of Marathon at Black River.

The vehicle failed to stop for those officers. Two spike belts were set up between Pic River and Peninsula Road with negative results.

The van continued westbound at high speeds.

The vehicle was found in the parking lot of a Nipigon business around 12:30 p.m.

Officers arrested the two suspects without incident. One male and one female are in custody.

The investigation is continuing.

Spike belts failed? There's no excuse for that. Maybe the Wawa OPP should stick to what they seem best at...playing radar games on the highway.

What is with these highway gas retailers actually allowing gas to pump without initiating the pre-pay process or going inside? Those days should be long gone...you can't trust anyone anymore.

That area they speak of is under the Marathon detachment not Wawa, and it would of been one heck of a trick for the Wawa OPP to pass the van they were chasing to get ahead of them and deploy the belts.

So I throw your own advice at you with a slight twist- Dudebro - Maybe you should stick to what you seem best at...lifting your coffee cup at the local coffee shop.

Awww, did someone not believe the speeding laws should not apply to them and get a ticket in Wawa?

Perhaps you could fill us in on how spike belts can never fail?

Do they completely cover the highway and ditch so no one can drive around?

Are there such tings as run flat tires?

Do you throw it out if there is other traffic and flatten everyones tires if you don't have time to stop traffic? I'm sure you would be fine with accidentaly having your tires flattened along with the bad guys?

Do you throw out the belt if the car is going 200kmh? Where does the belt go once the car hits it (check out youtube, it becomes a flying spike filled projectile).

Did the cops see something and decide not to throw the belt out?

Looks like in the end they got the guys and no one was hurt. Good news.

Cripes, someone needs more training. It's only a two lane road without a paved shoulder. Can't be that difficult.

I would guess if you don't know all the variables you can't be critical of situation :)

Tough guys hiding behind a username making fun of cops...I'm sure you two could have done better with your vast spike belt knowledge.

What if the two failed attempts were failures to get ahead of them. Pretty hard to deploy spike belts from behind the escapee.

Well, considering the story says the two spike belts were set up with negative results.. suggests they were set up. So someone must have been ahead of them to try and fail.

And come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I've sat and had coffee in a coffee shop. But I think I might have seen "The Wolf" in the area when I passed by.

Actually, I saw the road block and was waved over to the side of the highway. There were two OPP cars - one blocking each shoulder. There were two nail belts put down, each covering a bit more than half the highway. The van arrived shortly afterwards heading east and swerved twice to try to avoid the belts. Some of its tires seemed to pass over the belts but the van kept going and the two police cars picked up the belts and took off after it. One of the policemen had his weapon out but didn't shoot. We continued east and shortly afterwards passed about six or seven more OPP cars heading west. I guess stealing gas in Wawa is serious business.
