THUNDER BAY -- With the bow-hunting season starting Sept. 1, a city official says it may take a few years to work out all the problems with the hunt.

Around 90 people attended city's information session on the new deer bow-hunt held at Confederation College on Thursday. Council passed the by-law in an effort to curb the number of deer and human altercations.

City Licensing and Enforcement Manager Ron Bourret estimated that it may take three to four years to work out the kinks, but added that this will still be a positive year.

WOW! a City program that will just take 3 to 4 years to become kink-free! congrats!

So this is pretty much a free-for-all with Bourret admitting they have no way of tracking how many deer have been killed, hence no way of tracking whether this pathetic hunt is doing anything to reduce what a few call a "problem" with deer in the city. Tracking success/failure rate by monitoring the number of deer/vehicle collisions and asking hunters to report on an honor system? Seriously, is Thunder Bay city council comprised of a bunch of monkeys escaped from the zoo or what?

We should be so lucky as having a bunch of monkeys for city council!

I see you're not a hunter. Not everyone that hunts is a redneck localdog. Some are lawyers, doctors, police and will obey the law. Most WILL report their catch and if you don't believe that there's no point in trying to explain to you the mindsight of a typical hunter.

@ grumpee, sorry, I worded my comment incorrectly. I wasn't implying that hunters weren't honest and wouldn't report to the ministry, I was referring to Ron Bourret's comments on how they (the city) intended to monitor the success or failure of this hunt.

"He (Ron Bourret) said one of the ways to track the success of the hunt is through hunter feedback and the number of auto-accidents involving deer." "But that might take two or three years." he said.

I should have said hunter feedback, not honor system. How reliable is it to track the success/failure of a program by hoping people will give feedback to the city? And how many people report collisions they have with animals to the city? I stand by the rest of my comment, council is run by a group of zoo escapees.

And thanks for the chuckle about lawyers being honest...

Don't other cities do this? Why don't we copy what they're doing?

Why can't we just leave them alone? They haven't hurt anything or anyone. This isn't sport. They trust people and they're just going to walk up to someone who is over compensating for something in their life by killing something else and wham! a big arrow hits them in the heart...

Pretty lame tb news....your selective comment censorship is sad.
So many people are commenting with no knowledge of the truth.
I guess everyone that enjoys our great outdoors is a hillbilly redneck according to the comments allowed for the most part.
Every deer harvested is no longer a threat

Are you trying to say that a hungry deer is NOT a threat??!? These things are semi-wild animals now, and they have no fear of us. Make no mistake sir, an angry deer can drag a small child away just like a bear can. And at 60 km/hr, it is death sentence for the driver of a small SUV.

big joe mufferaw says:
That's a lot of nonsense. When has that ever happened? Anyone driving around on the island knows there are deer there. If they're doing 60 mph, they're the ones breaking the law. Leave your kid unsupervised and I'd be more afraid of the stray dog or that they might wander into traffic...let's talk about responsibility here.

If you drive a vehicle you're a bigger threat to people in this city than the deer are.

Twenty-five years of driving and nearly four dozen trips to Toronto and back over those years and I've yet to have a deer jump out in front of me. The city has not provided any stats to back up any of the statements they've made about an overabundance of deer in the city. Yes, there are a few deer/vehicle collisions each year, most occurring on the highways far outside the range of a local hunt. But compare those numbers to the number of collisions that don't involve animals and I'm sure you'll find its a very small percentage.

Who exactly are the deer a threat to? I must be missing all the news stories of angry deer dragging kids off in to the woods and causing havoc in the city.

I used a bow in the past, so I may just fire a few and see if I can beg me a nice buck or two. Is there some special training offered due to hunting on such a small island? No doubt, a rogue arrow could be a problem in such a small area with so many hunters.

Again I'm seeing people referring to hunting deer on a small island. Perhaps this poster could tell us where this Island is?

It's about time we had a deer cull! Just a month ago my buddy destroyed his blue dodge when a deer ran in front of him. We should extend this hunt all year long.

Not a fan of deer in the city, a few are OK but now it's out of hand...pretty much vermin that destroy property and jump out of the bushes in front of my car at 11PM. But at least a deer won't eat my kid!!

What about the bears??? I've got two sniffing around my area and back yard lately. So far the dog chases them off but they keep coming back to my yard! Sure as hell I won't wait for a city wide permit on bears if they get any closer to my house.

I got a kid that likes to play in the backyard and I won't have any issues with taking out the .300 mag if they get any closer...city limits or not! The only good thing about the bears is they are keeping the vermin deer away! Wish I could live trap the things and drop them off at Queen's park though...

ring of fire dude says:
Queens Park would be a god start , but lets go one step further and live trap enough bears to fill a cattle truck and release them in Algonquin park . I guarantee you will not hear a peep from the Gov't about "bear wise" instead they would ask the Armed Forces to take care of the problem .

When have all these deer accidents happened on the island? None of them made the news. None of them made the statistics the city used in its decsion. Most of this happened on highway 61 in the states. There are some pretty overactive imaginations here. And while we're at it, what about the overpopulation of grey squirrels...the noisy crows in the morning...the skunks digging up the lawn and stinking up our roadways...the ground hogs eating our gardens...raccoons are now in our garbage...the goose poop in our parks...if deer are vermin, then the city needs a plan for dealing with all the other invasive species...this bow hunt is a sham and a distraction...let's learn to get along with the wildlife that shares our environment with us. If you need to eat...go to the store!

Silverado says:
Everyone is forgeting that mother nature will eventually take care of over population of deer, through disease. The reason why we are also seeing an increase in the predator popualtion is due to the increase in the deer population. With this in mind I personally would rather have hunters keep the population of the deer at a managable number vs having more bears, lynx and even cougars in the city where our children are, or seeing the deer dieing off from disease. Mr. Bourret is correct in saying that nothing is perfect when it first starts and that some wrinkles will probably have to get ironed out and it will probably take 3-4 years of tracking to figure out how effective this hunt is, but at least it is a start to try and solve an increasing problem.
