Dozens of officers respond to out-of-control party

More than two dozen city police officers had to be called into action Friday night to deal with what has been described as an out-of-control party.

Police were contacted about the party around midnight in the Hacquoil Road area, just off Highway 61.  Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service say nearly 1,000 young people were in attendance and many of them appeared to be intoxicated.

Cars lining the roadways in the area were also causing traffic problems.

When police moved in to break things up, several of the party-goers turned belligerent. In one instance, an officer was almost struck in the head by a small boulder.

The gate at the nearby Founders Museum was rammed by someone who was leaving the party.

Police say such gatherings create major public safety concerns.

The large police response required also restricted the ability of police to respond to other calls in the city.

This generation of 16-24 year olds are out of control. They are disrespectful and their parents are to blame.

The kids were never taught to be accountable for their actions. Too many parents have forgotten how discipline works.

Because their parents are out at the provincial parks doing the same!

Over 20 years ago, we went to parties out that way. Young people aren't accountable for their actions because our social and legal systems tell them that nothing is ever their fault! Always somebody else to blame. No arrests? That's very unusual.

In the summer of 1984, a similar party occurred out on Mapleward; a police car was flipped over and set ablaze. Would you say that the generation of 44-52 year olds are out of control?

LOL, and YOU never went to a big party when you were younger? These parties are nothing new. They happened when I was a teenager in the 80's, and in my 20's in the 90's, and I am sure there were some in my 30's, so get off your soapbox.

As for the "small boulder" comment, why couldn't the author of this article just call it a rock?

So let me get your comment straight. Just because my 22 year chose to attend a party, he is out of control! And that I am to blame, he was never taught by me to be accountable for his action and that I never disciplined him. Not the case!!
Out of 1000 kids there were some who caused trouble and this leads you to state that this generation is out of control. That's a strong generalization!

Why generalize all young people these days into the category of ungrateful or disrespectful? There were 1000 people at this party! Of course some of the thousand are going to be idiots when the police show up but from the sounds of it the other 950 people dispersed calmly.

for someone to say the younger generation is out of control is rediculous. We were all at that age at some point and did stupid things. The sad thing is the media creates this sterotype how a generation is suppose to act. But then its the parents responsibilities to enstill respect and have good judgement of their actions. thankfully, i never acted like these people in the article due to my mom instilling fear into me. I will say this, i do laugh at the cops, especially through a ride program. Not because i'm not scared of them, its more that i'm scared of what my mother would do to me if i was "stupid".

Hold on: I live next door & I was ACTUALLY HERE that night-unlike many of you commenting. Those police numbers WERE COMPLETELY WARRANTED. There REALLY WERE OVER 1000 YOUTHS HERE! Do you know what a SEA of beligerent people that is? Unless you were here that night to see what was happening you cannot begin to fathom just how out of control & disrespectful that mob was. Yes we've all partied but this was something quite unique in scale & behaviour. Unless you have ever had 1000+ drunk/high youths congregating in your neighbourhood you shouldn't criticise the Police on this one. For example: the only access road was blocked for hours; what if someone had been hurt, gone into labour? There were many incidents that night that did not make it into this article, I suspect because it is still under investigation. Trust me when I say "mob mentality" had set in & the Police acted accordingly to protect the neighbourhood, the partiers, & themselves. P.S. Thumbs up to all the kids who used cabs.

You are 100% correct - seen several of these parties recently up close and personal - some of the young punks ( and they truly were punks) - Swearing as loud as possible - for no good reason other than to swear - Smoking a lot of funny smelling stuff - And totally acting like pigs - couldnt believe the garbage on the road in the morning - breaking things just to do it. Mob mentality truly takes over and you end up with a Vancouver mentality. Just dont get it - it is one thing to party and get blasted - it is another to be destructive and ignorant.

Kids will be kids. They were out enjoying the last weekend of summer before having to go back to school. It's not like this is anything new, when I was in high school it was all about the "pit parties". Sometimes cops would show up, sometimes they wouldn't. Either way good times were always had.
9/4/2012 5:26:32 PM
dynamiter says:
Dont know about the reporting on this article. But the Founders Museum is 1 kilometer away on Gillespie Road. If the reporting is correct then that is a lot of vehicles to have cars lined up from Hacquoil Road along Highway 61 to Gillespie Road. That would be a major traffic concern - especially given it is a major highway and people wandering along and across it. No wonder the Police went there to break things up.

Pit parties are pit parties - some began by word of mouth and land line telephone conversations - next they got bigger with cell phones - now you can get a map on your Iphone/blackberry so you know exactly where to go.

The police have no choice to respond - it seems that they were pretty passive. They could have blockaded the highway and set up ride programs on Highway 61 both sides, on Gillespie Road and on the far end of Hacquoil Road and checked everybody leaving the property - that would have nabbed a few over the .05. Supporting the local tow truck.

Yes the vandalism was excessive, but I'd like to point out that before the police were there no one was out of control, it was once they got there people started climbing on the roof and chanting and attempting to cause a riot. The decisions a small group of people made to destroy personal property should be accountable to them and them alone but of course officers were not paying attention to the hundreds of people they were shuffling through onto the streets. The carelessness of the police force and they're illogical way of dealing with a situation like this goes to show just how much effort they are willing to put into their work. It should have been thought out and planned more strategically then just assuming a thousand people will listen to what they have to say.

Bean says:
No, actually, you are incorrect....the youth were trespassing, climbing/breaking my fences, throwing garbage on my lawn, at my house, deficating & urinating on my lawn, & blocking the road LONG BEFORE the Police arrived. These kids need to grow up and learn to take responsibility for their OWN ACTIONS. No one MADE them do anything. There is partying, and then there is just acting like a disrespectful, spoiled brat, with a trumped up sense of entitlement.

Yes, kids will be kids, but that simply is out of control. And judging the behaviour of some of the kids, like throwing things at the police, they needed to be stopped.

THis article is not accurate in its reporting. And what if there was an emergency, heart attack, labor etc.... how would they have gotten out?

Kids these days are off the wall. Absolutely no sense of reality; assaulting the Police with a rock? Come on!!

15-20yrs ago, there were parties everywhere, every weekend when school started in the fall. Sure, the police showed up; but they did absolutely nothing to break it up cause they knew things weren't going to get to the point of chaos like they do now. Yeah, I understand driving while intoxicated is alot more serious now then it was back then, but the youth nowadays are fearless and chance everything. Can you blame the Po-Po??

White Lily, Mitchel Rd, Wild Goose and LSD pits were my favorites. Man, those were the good 'ol days!

I agree it was the good old days but unfortunately many people ruined it for generations to come. Example: Silver Lake campgrounds was a beautiful place to stay and wish I could today but, over partying camp wreckers soon changed that it became private. We even used to camp at Wild Goose but again, partygoers made sure the future could not be enjoyed...*sigh*

As an attendee of this party who is in the age group being harrased by these comments...

Lets get a few things straight...
1 - If the police never showed up this would have been fine! Things only got out of control when people were forced to leave early. There was a similar party last week that was allowed to be carried through and I am not reading about it in the news....

2)Bean... your probably one of those people who complain about bananas being to ripe at a grocery store. That is all

3)@stevee123There is no ice to skate on to play hockey and it would have been more dangerous to climb trees in the dark than attend this party.

4) Drinking and driving happened alot more back in the 70s and 80s than it does now. You guys were so respectful back in the day compared to us.

Rock on and peace out

Yes we all partied at some point in our lives. The kids of today though have no respect for others property let alone their own. They have the mentality that everything is replaceable because they're getting everything handed to them instead of working for it!!! The home owner in this case should be held accountable without question. This is also another effect of facebook, twitter and cell phones! The word of a party spreads like wildfire. These kids have too many connections to too many people and even though they're called friends on facebook, most are only mere acquaintances. Used to be that a few undesirables would show up at a party, now its hundreds.

COME ON COPS. You guys are JOKES.

There are too many 60+ er's in town...they don't want to see anyone enjoy their lives because they can't enjoy their own. Go be mad at the world somewhere else.

every generation of kids are out of control to a certain degree. the sad thing is, each year a generation wants to top what the last generation did. its like high school, who can be the best at sports and be on top. so for those of you saying that there out of control, i'm sure 99% of you were as well, just not to the extend some of them are now. We were all young and stupid once. Hopefully this experience the kids had will make them think twice on their actions and others will just not care till they take there own life, a friends, or a strangers. its sad reality. To the parents, enstill fear. Educated the consiquences of their actions. don't baby them and make them grow up.

For those of you blaming the police for the partiers' drinking & driving: Your argument doesn't teach a good lesson on how to party safely. So the kids show up (way out here)with a plan to get drunk/high but no plan to get home safely afterwards? I saw about a thousand cell phone screens lit up that night. Cell phones that could have been used to call a cab, a sober friend, parents/guardians...there are many options for a safe ride home. If the partiers had money for booze, pot, smokes, and glow sticks they totally could have budgeted for a cab ride home afterwards. A concept called "priorities". Stop blaming OTHERS for these kids' bad behaviour. Stop reinforcing this lack of responsibility. If you think you are old enough to "party" then do it safely from start to finish. Like I said before: kudos to those of you who were resopnsible enough to get cabs/rides. I know there were lots of you (because I saw a ton of cabs - at least at the start of the evening).
