Police are searching for a man they allege propositioned a 14-year-old boy in a Thunder Bay shopping centre bathroom.

On Sunday evening, at approximately 5 p.m., the victim entered the bathroom located between Metro and Shoppers Drug Mart at Grandview Mall, where he was approached. The youngster managed to get out of the washroom, running into the mall corridor and out of harm’s way.

The suspect was not caught, and is described as being 5-foot-9 with an average build, salt and pepper hair, stubble on his face and wearing round glasses.

He was last seen leaving the mall in a westbound direction.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Thunder Bay Police Services at 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 623-8477.
The investigation is ongoing.

lmao no pun intended....
The pervs need to watch out for the wrong person or they may be dealt with in an unexpected manner.

This is why we need something like Family Watchdog in Canada. Sex offender registries should be public information. I doubt this is the first time this pervert has done this.

How would this help? The police can surely search the Registry for 5'9" tall men with salt and pepper hair and glasses, which seems to be all the information they have (and if they have more and are holding it back, then it's not available to the public anyway). If he's in there, there's presumably photos that can be shown to the victim to ID the guy. And if he's not in there, then there will be nothing to find to begin with. Aside from inviting the public to get involved in an investigation that seems to be well within police capability to pursue, what would this accomplish? What value could the public add, as opposed to the amount of interference that could result?

The Registry is a great tool FOR THE POLICE. I can't see how making it public would offer any value to it at all.

Any person charged with a sex offence (especially against a child) should have their name added to a public registry whether they were convicted or not. Sex offenders should not be entitled to privacy. Their name, photo and address should be publicly available so people living in the same neighborhood as these lowlifes can better protect their kids. Your opinion might be different if it was your kid being propositioned by some deviant in a bathroom stall. Sex offenders prey on those unable to defend or protect themselves, they're not worthy of protection by the law. Put them in prison and let the general population take care of these goofs.

Sui Generis says:
If they are not convicted, they are not sex offenders. You're in favour of public humiliation for people who haven't even yet been found guilty of a crime?
9/5/2012 10:37:58 PM
The Wolf says:
So what you are saying is a person wrongly accused of a sexual assault by a pissed off revenge seeking troubled teenager should be ridiculed as guilty even though they were totally 100% innocent of anything?

Or

A person fitting the description of a sexual attacker is picked up, wrongly ID'ed as the perp, charged, then it discovered he isnt the person they were looking for but yet with your thought process he has to be registered as a sex offender?

Seriously? Want to re think your fix to this problem?
9/5/2012 11:20:14 PM
localdog says:
There is no easy answer for that. What about in cases where a woman is raped and out of fear refuses to testify against her attacker, or a child that is too young to testify against his/her abuser? There are predators out there that have been charged and beat the conviction for whatever reason. Should they be free to walk? I know what you're saying, the answer is just not that cut and dry.

@ Sui, it doesn't necessarily mean they are not sex offenders, it just means they are not convicted sex offenders. Most would agree Hitler was "a murderer", though he was never convicted of murder.

I don't even really disagree with you...at least, regarding what happens to these people in prison. However, once they've done their time and are tagged on the Registry, how does having this information public help? For one, police and other law enforcement disagree with making this information public, as places that do, like some states in the U.S., find the compliance rate drops dramatically. In Canada, where the Registries aren't published, the compliance rate is very high. Isn't it better to have more sex offenders living where the police know, then only a few, with the rest in the wind? Secondly, what would you do with this information? Shouldn't you teach your kids to be aware and protect themselves in any situation? (predators that haven't been caught yet won't be in the Registry) Moreover, we run the risk of vigilantism i.e. more crime in more neighborhoods. Overall, it makes more sense to let the police have this information and use it, than the alternatives.

Call me dumb, but I had to look up what "propositioned" means. I've never even heard that term used before.

"Make a suggestion of sexual intercourse to (someone with whom one is not sexually involved), esp. in an unsubtle or offensive way."

Hi Dumb.. I've seen this word used many times before in articles..and yes.. it describes the exact situation..

there are cameras all over the place in that mall. It is beyond me why they don't paste the guys pic on the website, someone would for sure recognize the molester and turn him in. Typical backwards TBay.

The Wolf says:
What if this kid is lying? What if the kid was being a hooligan and breaking a stall door and some upstanding citizen told him to knock it off and grow up?

Not saying that is what happened but many a person has been falsely accused of crimes like this and prematurely posting pictures of the accused could ruin an innocent persons life.

It wasn't until I was 19 that a man first propositioned me. It was out in the street though. I told him to f off. :) He was balding and drove a Landrover. Doubt that will help but people here seem to like having vague information so they can play pretend vigilante it seems.

@localdog: You wrote "Any person charged with a sex offence (especially against a child) should have their name added to a public registry whether they were convicted or not"
------>I hope 1 day your involved in a mix-up & take back those words. Your thinking is out there, way out there!
9/6/2012 6:17:47 AM
localdog says:
Why's that? The police don't often go out and charge people without any proof or just cause. When an individual is charged there are circumstances which have led the police to believe the charge is warranted. How often is a completely innocent "mistaken identity" charged with a sexual offence?
9/6/2012 9:26:38 AM
The Wolf says:
More then you would believe. And police are bound by law to place charges based solely on the report from one person with or without out evidence or witnesses.
