The mayor thinks getting prisoners to work in the community could be a good idea.

An agreement between the city and the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre Greenhouse and Garden program would see local inmates working on a community garden at the former Wilson Street Headland, which is now called the Spirit Garden.

The inmates would grow traditional Aboriginal medicines like sweetgrass, sage, cedar and tobacco.

Mayor Keith Hobbs said he remembers when inmates used to work on local highways and pick up garbage and that the idea has potential.

“I think keeping inmates busy and productive is a good thing,” he said.

The centre would choose inmates who were close to being released. That would also be a good way to help them transition back into the community, Hobbs said.

“I actually like the concept of getting inmates back reintegrated into the public.”

Waterfront project manager Katherine Dugmore said the idea came about after a conversation between the prison’s garden project and the city’s parks department. The plants would be used as gifts and for city Aboriginal ceremonies.

“In its ultimate version it could have the greenhouse and garden program growing the plants, installing the plants, maintaining the plants and then harvesting them and they would share in 50 per cent of the harvest,” she said.

The crew would be at the site around once a week. Dugmore and Hobbs said the prison has supervision and safety protocols in place to ensure public safety.

Council will receive confidential information about the program Monday. If approved, it could start next year.

Excellent idea!
Is the prison greenhouse big enough to grow the plants that the city conservatory will no longer be growing due to infrastructure problems?
The mayor can try it and get a green thumb and even develop an appreciation for flowers!

OMG...and WTF...I hear this on the news in the car on my way home this evening at 5pm...and all I can say to HOBBS is the following...you have a whole lot of bigger items on your agenda that you should be tackling...this is just another opportunity for the mayor to get himself in the news...if anything the prisoners should be utilized in the community going around picking up all and I do mean all of the unsightly litter that magically the city workers do not clean up...at least this would be adding to the city and all would benefit from this type of program.!!!

The inmates growing traditional Aboriginal medicines like sweetgrass, sage, cedar and tobacco...is a total farce, they can use all of the fertilizer that our mayor produces on a weekly basis to save $$$$...but then again what else would I expect from HOBBS.!!

We should get them to do mining and forestry too..

Also, they could be made to make products to export for trade..
If we adopt work prisons we can finally compete with 3rd world labour rates and be a major player on the world crap export game.

This fits well with the mandatory minimum prison sentences introduced in our country.

Let's peer down the slippery slope into the gulags and concentration camps, shall we?

What? They get little Field Trips now to tourist attractions? Instead, how about some old-tyme chain gangs cleaning up all the trash and full yellow bottles along the hwys. instead? No fly repellant allowed.

I say to heck with allowing inmates the extra freedom to do anything outside of the prison walls/fence. They lost their chance at freedom when the committed their crime. They should not have any extra privelages until they are done their sentence. Instead bring back the highway cleaning or community gardening for all the folks on welfare or unemployment that are perfectly capable of working.

Maybe the inmates could also take over groundskeeping for Muncipal Golf Course and garbarge pick-up! Glad to hear that CUPE doesn't mind!

Its prison not "super happy fun time" they should be paying for there crime not learning how to grow crops (weed).... they should be cleaning up needles in the parks and picking up garbage and litter along side there favorite drinking spots along the rivers and back alleys... so our children dont say look what i found! keep the drugs out of our prisons so they dry out and see what reality is all about ie:(WORK TO EAT ECT.)

Me n My Opinion says:
Revenge makes people feel great. You do the crime, you deserve to dig ditches in 90 degree weather with no water breaks....blah blah blah. It makes us feel great to think that. But, in reality, that does nothing to help anyone. What really happens is those individuals grow more hateful and don't learn anything that will help be productive when they're released.

Our goal as a society shouldn't be revenge - as good as it might make us feel. We're all a lot better off if programs like this can help rehabilitate people, so when they do get out, some of them may actually turn themselves around and become productive members of society. I'd rather have 10% of them leave prison with real aspirations to change than to have 100% of them leave hating society more than they already do.

A lot of these people just need a couple people who genuinely care about them to help them turn around. Does that makle me a bleeding heart Liberal? Not really-just a person who cares about our futures

I thought the waterfront was under the care of the City Parks Department now. They should be commenting on this items. The waterfront proejct is done, money all spent.

What is Dugmore doing still in the picture? or did the City create a job for life position where one does not exist?

if anyone has been to the Wilson St. Park they would know that it is full of needles and used condoms. Plus do you think they will allow murders and rapist out of jail? it will probably be the less violent people such as drunk drivers, cheque fraudsters etc..

What a Joke! I guess there is nobody else in the community who is looking for a job or any schools willing to donate thier time. Instead we will let those holding up our local convience stores or the guy who broke into my house plant and tend to a garden infront of the public. Is this city really that messed up?

If Corrections and city council want the inmates to do gardeing then they should be gardening vegetables to supply the Correctional Center and the Jail. This would be useful and cost saving for the government.

What kind of costs are associated with supervising these dudes? Increased numbers of Correction Officers, fuel transportation costs and so on. The claims of tradition herbs and such, are an attempt to make this program politically correct and palpable. Give me a break.

They used to grow vegetables at the Correctional Centre and raise cattle to supply the prison with meat and veggies. Maybe they should start doing that again on their own acreage. It would give them something to do and save the system some money as well as giving them healthy food to eat. If they do that they need to watch them closer than they did before or maybe put in higher fences to keep them from running off but that would be more acceptable to a lot of taxpayers.

I tend to think that if this goes through it will not stop the cycle of addiction. Inmates will simly find ways for PPL to hide drugs in the ground, and when Mr. Happy Inmates comes to plant, not only will he plant, but will also harvest contraband to take back inside were inmates will then consume them, and come out seeking more drugs with whatever means to get it, and boom he / she will be back in corrections locked away till his turn comes up again to go gardening again. Just my thoughts !!
